This was a random find because my wife loves mashed potatoes in which this place specialises. I booked ahead which is recommended at this time of year. Warm, friendly welcome on arrival, great service throughout and great food. Reasonable prices too. We’ll definitely be back.

4 of us ate here before heading into the Xmas market, 1 of us had been before and recommended it, the rest of us will undoubtedly return. The starters are a decent size, we ordered 2 between the 4 of us, with extra forks. Haggis,...More

We really enjoyed the food with a good choice of different mash or rosti. Although it is just a small place the atmosphere is very lively if a little loud at times.

We had the soup, lamb shank with wholegrain mustard mash, and chicken breast with classic mash. The soup was tasty. Lamb shank was very tender and simply delicious, with a great cranberry wine sauce to match. Chicken breasts were juicy and tender, tasted amazing. For...More

After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor I convinced my wife to have lunch here on Sunday. We enjoyed the food although I felt that my haggis dish could have been hotter. Nice selection of local beers.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its

this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

"Makars is becoming an Edinburgh institution, a rare true independent operator that promotes local artisan producers and ethical behaviour. Makar’s food has been described as “an Edinburgh gem”, “a local culinary hero” and “simply the best in Edinburgh”. Makars receives rave reviews and many of our guests come back time and time again. If you are struggling to get a seat at our busy Makars Mound site we have a much larger Makars WEST END restaurant that has exactly the same great food and team. It is not usually as busy and has a more relaxed atmosphere. It is about an 8 minute walk from the Mound along Princes Street. Our food ranges from slow cooked meats, char grilled sausages/poultry, (all in rich special sauces), to lunch time rapid lighter/tighter options through to a well received range of vegetarian and GF dishes. We use the finest potatoes for our mash, rostis and skins all served with fresh local vegetables garnishes and salads.
