Came on a recommendation as wanted nice family meal at the end of our short break. And what a find!! Right in the heart of the City Centre near Princes Street, interesting and informal decor- very welcoming and attentive staff and superb service. A very good and appropriate selection of wine, beers and whiskies( of course) and a great choice... More

Both my husband & myself had delicious dinner here . Booked through groupon & can honestly say we were very impressed with food and service. Being a resident of Edinburgh we have walked passed this place many times without realising it was there. Will definitely return

Came across by accident with my girlfriend when looking for a restaurant in a very busy Edinburgh. We were given a table straight away. Staff were attentive and the food was amazing. The sea bass I had was excellent and sticky toffee was a delight. Prices were also reasonable will come again when back in Edinburgh.

Great food variety. Something different from you can find in Edinburgh. The portions are huge, enough to share, and they're also very tasty and well cooked. The servers are effective and polite and the environment is cosy and relaxed, but maybe too dark in some points. The ox cheeks are really good and the mussels -main meal- are enough to... More

Our first night in Edinburgh left us hunting for somewhere to eat, and we all fancied a steak! Walked passed The Rosehip on the way back to our hotel and took a look at the menu which was extensive and good choice of steaks. Booked our table and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening with great service & great food. The... More

One of many restaurants on Rose Street which is much nicer inside than it looks from the street. Not busy. Tasty soup and sandwich. Good value.

What great little place this is. My wife and I stopped by for a light lunch, we opted for the soup and sandwich meal for £6.50, what we were presented with was excellent. I'm not a big sandwich fan but these things were awesome. Much better for lunch than eating a load of deep fried rubbish out of a box... More

The Rosehip offers a real genuineness in their friendly relaxed service, with a background of vintage decor, the clinking of antique crockery and chilled out tunes. A supremely fresh high quality of rotating specials and classic main meals, there is also the generous grill menu for those who need a more hearty feed. The head chef has a flare for finding fish and meat from the local suppliers which is evident in the tasting. Of a lunch time a quick bite can be found in the soup and sandwich menu for £6.50, And the restaurant is child friendly. The bar offers the biggest selection of whiskies in the New Town, an extensive wine & spirits list and a range of Scottish bottled and draught beers. It certainly is nice to see a quality central site independent of any of the chains which are so prevalent these days. Open for a hearty breakfast from 10am-12noon during weekends, the summer and festive season.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
