We stopped for a drink at this pub after visiting Edinburgh Castle. The manager explained that our 12 year old couldn't sit with us unless we were eating which we thought was ok because we sat outside & there was a bench directly opposite our...table. My son came over and was chatting to me from outside the pubs perimeter when the manager came out shouting & claiming that we could lose him his licence. We politely explained that our son was standing on the footpath while the manager continued to raise his voice. My husband asked him to leave us alone & return inside when he physically reached over & grabbed our drinks out of our hands & ordered us to "get out" . I have never been exposed to such aggression by a publican & wonder if the manager is actually anti Irish which is very disappointing.More

The pub is the oldest in Edinburgh, is like a time machine... Staff very friendly and the food is amazing.. very tasty. We had Haggis and Steak and Ale Pie. Definitely coming back.

The most friendly and hospitable pub we visited in Edinburgh. Staff were lovely, chatty and genuinely just very approachable and kind. Food was brilliant, delishious and hearty as you'd expect from a pub. Cool history and spooky vibe from the age of the place and...apparent hauntings. Just a cool place to visit and have a wee couple of drinks! 10/10More

Quite possibly the best 'beyond burger' I've had. Very friendly and fast service, and it's rich history and a good atmosphere. Would absolutely come back again.

A buzzing pub with interior and exterior seating. We were served quickly and by friendly staff. Try the steak and ale pie; you won’t be disappointed.

Not a great experience, ordered a vodka and lemonade, it was awful, lemonade was flat no fizz, took it back to the bar and would expect staff to resolve the issue instead when I asked for a new one was told 'you'll need to pay...for it' awful attitude, would not returnMore

978lynseyg, we're disappointed to hear of the negative experience you had at our pub, it's not what we do here, I would appreciate if you could send me an email and tell me more about that day so I can address the problem. Regards. Vanessa

- Staff were rude - Manageress of the bar had a target on our back as soon as we walked in telling us to shut up or get out. - pub advertises as a boisterous place to drink and a good laugh but is quite...the opposite.More

Hi Departure67391139153, I think your review does not tell the whole picture, the staff were never rude and, as you can see on other reviews, our staff always try to go above and beyond to make customers feel at home, that’s our goal and what...More

Stopped here for lunch part way through a hop on and off bus tour. A great atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent tasty food. The pub is full of stories and history and with the bonus of being reasonably priced in a city centre.
