Only one vegan option for a main course and it's salad. Considering Edinburgh is the most vegan-friendly city in the UK this is pretty poor, and the number of vegans is growing all the time. Otherwise a pleasant visit.

Fun pub, lively scene, great beer on tap and lots of great pub food offerings. Games on the TV and very busy bar make this a fun place!

A great, traditional pub in an excellent location in Edinburgh's town centre. Very nice decor of both Scotland and Edinburgh images. Nice atmosphere.

I arranged to meet friends before a film on a Sunday night , it was very quiet and from outside the kitchen it looked as though there were 2 staff on so my boyfriend an I ordered some food thinking it would arrive in plenty of time for the film -chicken wings for him , a bun-less chicken burger for... Even though this is just a basic pub, I must said that food and service are not particularly good. If you have to go here for some reason just don't go there with too many expectations.

Thinking of a quick bite before going to a show or a classical concert, then you could do worse than go to the Shakepeare. Good nosh, real ale, and friendly staff, make for a great night.

The bar was nice enough, but the portion sizes for food were laughable. Drink prices were exactly what you would expect for the location. Server was lovely, hence the 3 stars.

We went there the other day with my friends and the waitress was unpleasant, impolite and all around very unfriendly. You had to go and order from the bar, which was inconvenient as we were a group of people. However, the food was good. I would not go back.

We tried eating here. We waited a long time and were told to seat ourselves after standing around feeling awkward for a while. Then we waited another while for a server to come to our table. When she did, without any greeting she said: "So you know it is about 45 minutes to an hour to get food. Order at... More

Sunday roast was delicious, however the beef was little dry. Not enough gravy, and veggies. Chicken was perfectly cooked. Yorkshire pudding was delicious, that's the best I had so far. Customer service was also good. Overall we had a very positive experience.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
