Spiffing set menu of £10.95 for two courses or £13.95 for three.. with plenty to choose from and good sized portions you would find it hard to beat Howies for a city centre restaurant at this price. Between the six of us we ate mussels in a tomato and chilli sauce, traditional creamy cullen skink and tasty carrot soup for... More

We wanted a nice Scottish meal and I feel that's what we got! Had the haggis to start, and then a stew with greens on the side. Warming and yummy, staff were nice, decor was simple but pleasant. Would be happy to go back

Excellent food and welcoming staff. We enjoyed the scottish haggis, and a lovely fresh salmon. The atmosphere was great, and not too noisy. Ask for a corner table if you like some more privacy.

Ate there one night during a recent trip. It wasn't very busy, I ate early, but there were a few tables occupied. The staff were welcoming and I was shown to a table and my coat hung up. The drinks list is not bad with a reasonable choice of gins without being a bar, I chose The Botanist. The menu... More

Fish was fresh, well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Impressed with Cullen skink having tried it for the first time. Service would have been better as I waited ages for a dessert menu so ended up leaving out dessert.

we had lunch here due to a computer cliche at the Waterloo place resturant. The staff, food and service was excellent, and I would highly recommend a meal here.

A convenient restaurant located on the picturesque Victoria Street, with a nice choice of local and Traditional Cuisine. Good prices and open for late lunches and late dinners. Good menu options, as well as yummy specials.

I wanted something fancier than just a simple coffee shop or a pub for my birthday evening that I spent in Edinburgh. So I just bumped into this restaurant and thought i'd come in. It was an excellent choice. I got an awesome amazing juicy steak and fries and brilliant Italian wine. The atmosphere in the reastaurant is very friendly... More

Had an A La Carte dinner with a glass each of the house white and red. Both the food and wine were excellent as was the service. I did mean to return for a fixed price menu but never got around to it.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
