This is a gay bar, but welcoming to all. My partner and I are straight and had a great night. Didn't try the food, but they have a good selection of drinks behind the bar and the staff are chatty and lovely. We were there on a Wednesday night and went downstairs for Prize surprise. I've never done anything like... More

You cannot beat this bar for the friendly atmosphere. Music is always great no matter what night you go on. Staff always happy to see you and make you feel so welcome. Their downstairs club area is open till 3pm on a Friday and Saturday. Their famous shot is called a pussy bomb and is a must!!! Just watch out... More

Great cocktail bar, well prepared drinks and a decent selection of beers too. You can get food here too, but I didn't so can't comment on it. It is listed on Facebook as a Gaybar , and given that my wife was the only woman in there, it probably is; but this just seems ridiculous in 2016, can't we all... More

Called in for a quick pint while I decided where to eat. Its a strange old set up once you get inside. Very reasonable prices but only let down for me was my pint of Heineken was a bit warm.

Lovely place to just people watch with a pint. Food very good and value for money. The evening is very busy and a great atmosphere. Proprietors Louise and Wendy really do go out of their way to make this place a great watering hole. Would highly recommend.

Visited during weekend in Edinburgh, busy on Saturday and gets quite full but you got served straight away at bar. Sunday much more relaxed, different music and cheap cocktails, highly recommended,

Lovely spot to sit outside in the sun but have something other than coffee! (I guess it is a bar after all)

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
