Being a grumpy late 20 year old, I was not entirely sold on the idea of afternoon tea. I must say I was pleasantly surprised, the venue was immaculate, there was a harpist playing on the balcony above and the 4 courses of amuse bouche, sandwiches, scones and pastries were beautifully put together. Needless to say I left full and... More

A Valentine Day treat as part of our honeymoon. An absolutely lovely setting with a delightful selection of savouries, pastries and cake. A little gift too from The Balmoral to take home.

I booked afternoon tea at The Balmoral as a last day treat for my family during our trip to Edinburgh. I looked at lots of afternoon tea venues, but this looked the best ... and it was! Lovely service at just the right pace, wonderful food in very elegant and comfortable surroundings. Would recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

My wife and I visited The Palm Court for Afternoon Tea on a Monday afternoon around 2 pm. The staff. Was friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is that of a refined and distinguished European hotel. While it was not inexpensive (£70 for the two of us), we felt it was well worth it. The amuse buch was a delightful butternut... More

Very comfortable seats and relaxing live harp! Standard selection of sandwiches and amuse bouche. Service was good but could be better for a 5 * luxury hotel. When we asked if we could take away the left overs they simply handed us a box.

Had a fantastic afternoon tea while a friend was in town! Beautiful presentation and very delicious food. They even gave us tea and chocolate to go! The food was very filling and the timing of the food was just right. They did not rush us at all-other afternoon teas I have gone tend to press you on time. For the... More

The restaurant is beautiful and it had a great atmosphere. We found the pastries to be a bit of a let down but the scones were very nice. We liked the gift plate at the end so all in all it was okay value for £35 as some elements were lovely such as decor and sandwiches and scones but the... More

If you are looking for a place in Edinburgh to enjoy afternoon tea, or dessert and coffee, then this is the place. The room is beautiful. The high ceiling with the glass dome is decorated beautifully. I found the room to be very soothing, relaxing and calming. The staff is very attentive. Selections were varied and plentiful enough for us.

Excellent afternoon tea here. The gift at the end was a lovely touch. It was nice to not have sweet outweighing the savoury. Nice balance. Friendly service.

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
