We booked a table via OpenTable app as we the reviews were good. It was Saturday night and our booking was for 21:15. We booked the table probably 30 minutes before and as we arrived we were told that the restaurant has closed the kitchen. We said that we booked the table so then we were encouraged to stay. We... Decided to try this restaurant for lunch, we chose the lunch set menu which was at a really good price. High quality food, really good portions and great skills went into the meal from the chef. All I can say..... Yum Yum Yum!!!

Spent an evening with family, enjoying the new menu, which was simply fabulous. From my first taste of Haggis (accompanied by a delicious chilli jelly), and followed by succulent beef cheeks- the presentation, and taste, was divine. However, the best was saved until last: the chocolate tart was sublime! Come to Sylvester's for a friendly, unassuming ambience- with excellent choices... More

Friendly service and consistently good food - highlights include rabbit ravioli and a modern (unpretentious) haggis main course. Incredible desserts.

Food was superb. Rabbit ravioli had subtle taste. Haggis main was the best I've had and rhubarb trifle was excellent. Amazing value for money.

We went here for Valentine's Day dinner and it was an absolute treat. Great range of local craft beers and many, many wines, fantastic friendly and attentive service, simple but charming decor that made you feel comfortable to eat and chat and relax... now let's talk about the food.... We both went for the three course, pre-theatre menu which was... More

My daughter recommended this restaurant as it is run by a husband of a friend of hers. When we went in it was quite quiet for a Saturday night but it is away from the city centre. There was only one waitress working but the service was excellent. We all had rabbit ravioli for starter which was absolutely delicious. The... More

I was in with 4 friends last week and had a superb meal here. The food is really good and excellent value - you would pay so much more for this in the town centre. There is a great wine selection and the waitress was incredibly nice, very attentive and friendly. Have already booked to go back.

The menu looks great and the reviews are generally favourable, so off we trekked. Friday night, decent location, central ....yet the restaurant had not one table, not one! Should have taken the hint and walked out then! The service was completely bizarre; one very young and out of her depth member of staff who didn't know the menu. Her friend... More

My wife and I came here prior to to the NYE celebrations on the royal mile and princes street. Excellent choice, Marta was on duty and made us feel very welcome. We both chose fish for starter and main course and we were not disappointed cooked too perfection and very well presented. Good food, great staff, lovely city and a... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
