I visited Katie's for the first time since the new owners took over. The staff are very welcoming and have a great line in chat and humour. The food was very good indeed. Two of my friends started with the chicken pate which they said was gorgeous. Laura and I had the vegetable pakora which lovely and crispy and delicious.... More

We had dinner at Katie's Diner and loved it! Friendly, great service, bright and airy with great views and in a fab location. We had poppers and panko prawns for starter. Both delicious. The steaks were fantastic quality and beautifully cooked. All sides just right and bonus fantastic crispy onion rings. We shared a pudding - very tasty Eastern Mess.... More

Katie's Diner has now been taken over and Katie & Geoff have left. The new place is still to settle in so I am sure it will improve over time as the people seem really nice. The service was absolutely delightful - however they need a bit more practice with the food e.g the steaks were not cooked as ordered... More

Thank you for your constructive feedback and for alerting the Tripadvisor community to the new management of Katies. Given that your visit was in week 2 of our arrival you are right we do need some time to settle in! We continue to offer our great steaks from the same butcher, and we have expanded the menu to offer new... More

Wonderful friendly, informal dining. The steaks are superb and cooked just as you like them our table ranged from very rare to almost cremated and everyone was delighted. The starters and desserts were excellent and a bit out of the ordinary. We wish the new owners all the very best. They are certainly keeping up very high standards.

Katie's Diner is under new management, but every bit as good for high quality, delicious informal dining. Still highly recommended: we had a fabulous meal for 6 a week into the new ownership. The steaks are still second to none. Excited to see what the new chef makes of the restaurant over the coming months.

First visit to Katie's - have never been able to get a table before. First impression is that the tiny restaurant area is a bit like somebody's slightly tatty front room: don't go expecting smart decor, and turn up in your comfy clothes, not your glad rags. However the place is warm and pleasant, the service is extremely friendly and... More

Went to Katie's for a birthday meal. All 3 courses were amazing. The ribeye steak was the best I had ever had. A lovely atmosphere. A quiet and intimate setting and a lovely welcome. Can't wait for my next birthday for a return visit.

My husband and I happened upon Katie's Diner recently. Unsure of eateries in Edinburgh we were immediately drawn into the cozy atmosphere that Katie's Diner offered. Homely, in the best sense and welcoming, on arrival our host was friendly and made us feel right at home. We didn't have much time to eat but once we ordered, we hadn't long... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
