This restaurant is great! The chips are really nice. I took my family there and we ordered a few different things on their menu, like deep friend pizza and haggis wedges, to share. The dishes are not expensive but filling and well done. The toilets are clean and upstairs is a good place to sit by the window to get... More

Went into The City Restaurant today at lunchtime, it's worth going to for the friendly welcome that I've received on every visit in the last three months. It doesn't matter whether the place is quiet or it's heaving your always made very welcome. The food as always is hot, well prepared and very tasty. Today I had the breaded haddock,... More

Had passed this restaurant when we were staying around the corner. Good simple food very well prepared and cooked and served by delightful staff. Breaded Haddock and crisp chips were superb washed down with some wine. The restaurant has an open kitchen and is spotless-we were fascinated watching the dedicated staff cleaning and preparing food they did not stop. Definitely... More

Quick lunch stop. Well laid out, clean chippy with friendly attentive staff and quick professional service, by which I mean our waitress asked the right questions to ensure our food was spot on! Food was beautifully cooked and not greasy, huge rolls and good coffee. Fabulous keep up the good work!

My husband and I stopped in for breakfast before we tackled Arthur's Seat. He got the large cooked breakfast and I got the porridge and bacon roll. Both were very delicious. The bread for the bacon roll was fresh and oh so yummy and I enjoyed my first experience with porridge. My husband really enjoyed the cooked breakfast. We would... More

Bit of a chip shop atmosphere downstairs so ask for a table upstairs, which is very nice. Service is quick and friendly. Menu is varied. We had pasta and pizza. Reasonably priced. Clean and well managed business.

So.. The City Restaurant.. This place was recommended by several people prior to actually going. It's a restaurant that provides a take away service. We decided to go for the take away option so that we could eat and walk but actually decided to cross the street and sit on the benches there, given that it was a lovely night.... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
