This is our third visit to this restaurant, and the service and food has always been excellent. The staff are really friendly and make you feel welcomed. Food is served fairly fast and comes in big portions.

We came to City as I have heard my cousins have been a few times before and is quite popular. Its a short walk from the city so perfect if you want to be nearby. The menu's quite big with something for everyone and I liked how they do a little takeaway chippie on the side. It was quiet when... More

I ordered a double burger, but didn't realize that it had bacon on it. I asked them to cook a new one because I could not eat the bacon or the bacon grease that was all over the burger. Instead, they removed the bacon and added cheese, but brought the same burgers. I again told them, I cannot eat the... More

Great food. The battered sausage supper is a must try! Staff attentive & helpful. Only downside is, it is not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.

Told to check this place out for its food, and this proved good advice. You may forgive yourself for thinking its a cross between a chippy and Ed's Diner, but far from it. Staff very welcoming and make an effort to sit you quickly, whilst the food, especially the fish dishes are value for money. This is one place (fishy... More

We popped in here for a quick bite to eat one Saturday evening. Although it was busy we were served promptly and enjoyed sitting a window seat watching the world rush by. Great burgers!

We enjoyed an unexpected meal in this restaurant. We went upstairs and found that to be nice and quiet but atmospheric. The waitress knew the food inside out and was able to answer detailed questions. The soup tasted home made and was served with granary and white bread. The main courses arrived and were not a disappointment. We would visit again.... More

waited and ignored for ages, had to be reassured at least three times that my food and coffee were coming. The chips were undercooked and the staff never really cared when I told them

My daughter and I love it here, we like upstairs with a window seat! We had lentil soup followed by salmon and breaded haddock. Lovely, staff are friendly too.

Nice evening meal at City Restaurant today. Spotted on TA as a decent cheapish place to eat. It is a family run place centred around a chip shop but has dining facilities on ground and first floor. Enjoyed very good burgers and scampi. Service was attentive and food came quickly and was piping hot. Menu is more varied than a... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
