This was our first visit to 1861, and what a treat it was.The whole meal was absolutely delicious with local produce cooked to perfection and served in a very pleasant intimate restaurant. The service was exemplary, by Sarah who catered to our every need, and helped the evening flow in a very congenial manner. If you haven`t tried it yet, I... More

The meals at this restaurant are fabulous. Fantastic attention to detail, lovely welcome from our host and joint proprietor Mrs King whose husband is the genius in the kitchen. Not cheap but as I say, Fine Dining. We have been several times now, never fails to impress. Look out for GroupOn and TravelZoo offers for a real treat.

This is probably the only restaurant I've ever been to that charges to us a credit card. Things started well with drinks on the small lounge area. Jars of jams and preserves are dotted around, presumably for sale, but with no indication of prices. We Awere given a cucumber jelly with yoghurt topping as an amuse bouche which was lovely.... Enjoyed the taster menu today. Each course was delicious and explained with enthusiasm and care by the waiting team. Sometimes taster menus can be a bit pretentious and about showing off rather than really good food. Thankfully the latter is true here and all of the waiting team are excellent. Can't wait till my next visit

It is not necessary to repeat the accolades paid to this restaurant more to endorse them. Friendly patient and professional service with excellent taking food in a relaxed un-rushed atmosphere. Whilst not being a cheap establishment the value for money in terms of standards cannot be faulted.

My husband and I decided to cheer ourselves with a lunch, as were both recovering from bad colds. We weren't disappointed, the atmosphere was excellent, starting with drinks and nibbles, very pleasant. The starter of fish soup was lovely, although a slightly strong taste for me. My fricassee of pheasant was top notch, done in a mustard and cream sauce. The... More

We visited 1861 about six years shortly after the owners had refurbished the premises after staying in the locality for a couple of days and were very impressed then. We noticed that a deal was on offer with 'Groupon' - probably to attract customers due to it's relatively remote location? - and thought we would make the effort to travel... More

Two of us came for lunch wanting to try it again after a gap of a few years. We had been disappointed last time but wanted to give it another chance. However, we were not impressed by the food. The welcome was very warm and there is a nice lounge area for pre-meal drinks while you look at the menu.... More

This restaurant was one that we had looked to visit for a while, and reading the reviews we were looking forward to going. We visited 2-3 weeks ago as a group of friends/couples. On arrival the lounge area for drinks was nice and relaxed. However, the overall restaurant lacked atmosphere. Yes it was quiet, only another couple eating that evening,... More

We went to 1861 for the first time for my mum's birthday, and cannot praise it enough. As soon as we arrived there were sofas set up by the fireplace with snacks ready for us - and two of us can't eat gluten, so there were already gluten free nibbles there. We also had our own full menu, which you... More
