This was our second visit to Blackfriars. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Service was good except that our Aperitifs arrived with our starters rather than before. As we were there in December it was the Christmas Menu and a 3 course lunch was £27. To start, we had the prawn cocktail, the vegetable soup and the game terrine. All... More

First class from start to finish, Lee and the team were brilliant and the food was top notch. We ate from the three course xmas menu with most dishes ordered by party of ten. Empty plates and plenty of compliments from all of the party

We pre-booked this restaurant for our son's Graduation dinner for nine people and everything went brilliantly. The food was beautiful, the atmosphere cosy, and the staff attentive. Three-courses for nine people came to £400, including drinks, wine etc. Not cheap, but the food was not only beautifully cooked, but generous. We were positively full! And what a fabulous, historical setting.... More

We visited as a family (6 of us) to celebrate my daughters graduation. It really is a hidden gem. Fabulous old building. We had the Christmas menu. The food was fantastic and the service excellent. Would certainly recommend to anybody who loves good food in a stunning venue.

Our group of 10 visited on Sat 3rd Dec for a birthday meal. From start to finish everything wA great. We had ore-ordered from the Dec set menu & not one person in the group were disappointed. The food was wonderful! The wine list & beer menu extensive and very good but most of all the staff, ( especially Laura-Marie)... More

Having visited this restaurant a few years ago and had an amazing evening meal, I was looking forward to Sunday lunch. However the food and service left a lot to be desired. While the staff were friendly and helpful, the restaurant was clearly short staffed and we had a long wait for each course. While I expected it to be... More

Christmas lunch for 6 - food was very nice with a mix of traditional Christmas options and a few more unusual options. Lovely old building really adds to the character. Service was generally good, but did get a little slow towards the end of our meal. Good place to go with family, or work and a nice change

We went here early evening after a Christmas shopping session. When my husband booked, he was told that we would have to vacate our table at 7pm, but at no point in the evening did we feel rushed or hurried. Service was friendly and attentive throughout. There was a good choice on the Christmas menu, although the goose was not... More

Booked table for large party on a weekend away before Christmas. Outside the area and went on reviews on this site and booked. We had an excellent night with great food quality and excellent service, great night out for a special occasion.

Four of us were booked for lunch, only two starters chosen, one mushrooms and the other risotto, both ok. Main courses two of us chose the steaks with mash, could not chew it, was awful, offered alternative but nothing else on the menu I wanted. The chef apparently agreed and said the steak had been marinated over night and it... More

Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle is Britains oldest purpose-built restaurant, dating back to 1239 when it was used as a refectory by hungry monks. Luckily the food is a bit more modern, and the award-winning menu and historical surrounds have made this one of Newcastles most popular restaurants. Whether youre dining in the candlelit medieval banquet hall, the intimate dining room or the garden terrace, be sure to arrive early for a delicious cocktail at the bar. The menu never fails to impress, and favourite dishes include the wild rabbit stew with prunes, roasted almonds and Jerusalem pure and grilled scallops with roast pumpkin, French beans and beetroot coulis. Blackfriars Restaurant has an acclaimed wine list.
