We went to Blackfriars today for my birthday. We have been here many times before and it never fails to please. The food is absolutely lovely. The beef is the best I've ever had. The staff friendly and the service excellent. As it was a birthday lunch a glass of "fizz" was complimentary - a very nice touch. We're already... More

My wife bought me tickets to Blackfriars' inaugural pizza and prosecco night for Christmas, and we have just got back from a lovely evening of entertainment. We were treated like family, welcomed into the restaurant by the bakers, waiting staff and owner, and nothing was too much hassle! We made and ate lots of delicious pizza and met some great... More

We had pre-booked a late lunch here after our daughter's graduation. We had a very pleasant meal, mains and a shared dessert. It was almost Christmas so restaurant was tastefully decorated. Staff were very attentative and I would recommend it and visit again.

We went there as heard a lot about the place. The restaurant itself is a lovely space but the food is not great and the service is poor.

Fantastic food, staff, atmosphere all made our Christmas Party fabulous. From the moment we made our first enquiry the service we received was excellent, despite our numerous changes! We would highly recommend Blackfriars to everyone and are ready to place our booking for this year's party already!

I attended on a Saturday evening with a friend, it was quiet when we arrived at 6pm but it soon became more busy and lively. We ordered our mains and received an Amuse Bouchée of Artichoke mousse with honey and apple crisp; an acquired taste, in my opinion. As the mains were served I had the Guinea Fowl with Puy... More

I had been wanting to try this restaurant for some time, but the experience did not meet the expected reputation of Blackfriers. I cannot fault the initial service given as we were seated promptly, given time to ponder a good choice from the menu and served drinks in good time. The restaurant itself has lovely setting and a nice atmosphere.... More

This is such a unique place.... the setting, the ambience, the food, the staff cannot be faulted. One of the few places in Newcastle that offer a fully fledged fine dining experience and it is done with love and care... the menu specialises in bringing the best ingredients Northumberland has to offer to the table, everything is made from scratch... Description
Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle is Britains oldest purpose-built restaurant, dating back to 1239 when it was used as a refectory by hungry monks. Luckily the food is a bit more modern, and the award-winning menu and historical surrounds have made this one of Newcastles most popular restaurants. Whether youre dining in the candlelit medieval banquet hall, the intimate dining room or the garden terrace, be sure to arrive early for a delicious cocktail at the bar. The menu never fails to impress, and favourite dishes include the wild rabbit stew with prunes, roasted almonds and Jerusalem pure and grilled scallops with roast pumpkin, French beans and beetroot coulis. Blackfriars Restaurant has an acclaimed wine list.
