Decided to visit with a friend who had never been, what a pleasant change to walk into a pub where the locals talk to you. A really friendly atmosphere, good beers and what looks like a good menu. We had been using another pub for a monthly meet and a couple of pints but decided to visit the Black Lion.... More

Good pub grub in a fantastic setting. Miles from civilisation and set by the heritage railway and canal. Brilliant location. Difficult by car but is a good walk from the car park about a mile up the road. Worth the walk though, especially on a warm sunny day. On the heritage railway gala days, I've had the hog roast, and... More

Best hidden gem in Staffordshire . I shouldn't really write a review , should be kept quiet. Perfect public house. No frills , no gimmicks, just fantastic selection of beers and ciders. Mega sized hot food baps now served with chips if required. The chilli flavoured scratchings were lovely. Add to this real fires, tiled floors so pouches welcome ,... More

Probably the best pub experience on my recent trip to the UK. A beautiful location, and a relatively unspoilt, down to earth, typical North Staffordshire pub. Until recently, only accessed by steam train, canal barge or walking. Now a small road access allows more visitors, but this has not affected it's charm. Great beer, a friendly host, and massive portions... More

Great food, what we got for our money was brilliant. Very welcoming. We sat outside because we had 2 dogs but the owner said we were welcome to go inside with them. Bonus, they sell Hop house 13 on draft too :-)

We paid a visit to this pub on a cold Friday night ,we were met by a lovely array of very friendly staff and fantastic landlord who all made us feel very at home. A nice burning coal fire added to the warmness of their welcome . We decided to try the fish and chip meal and we weren't disappointed,a... More

Difficult to find, but more than worth the effort. A classic canalside counrty pub, set in beautiful surroundings, with a genuinely unspoiled interior. Good choice of well kept cask beers, and although, unfortunately, the place was too full to order food, the dishes they were serving looked particually appetising, especially considering the prices. One for list of great finds.

After a 2 mile walk along the canal we came across this excellent pub. Some great locally brewed beers and cider. The mango cider is a must.

My friend arranged a a memory day for her mother at the Black Lion and the day was perfect. It was a beautiful location and the staff could not have been more helpful especially Sam in the Kitchen. The food was very good and the prices were very reasonable. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Black Lion as a... More
