Booked on the net for dinner at 8.15pm when we arrived it was very busy. They were catering for a wedding party in a separate outdoor dining area. The staff did explain that the wait for food would be longer than usual that's fair enough,...More

No matter how many times I do this I get mega enjoyment of a table for two on the balcony overlooking the Cherwell. The food is better than ever, a superb wine list for all tastes and budgets, and wonderful friendly service. We had crab...More

When everything comes together to create a legendary English summer then you'd be foolish to miss the chance to experience the peaceful and charming scenes provided by this restaurant in the quintessentially English location on the banks of the Cherwell River in Oxford. So in...More

To be fair to this restaurant, I was not paying the bill so I did not complain at the time (as I would normally have done) as I did not want to embarrass my generous host. Had I done so they may have responded positively...More

Lunch with old friends - great table by the window; excellent service which was efficient without making us feel hurried; delicious menu and good vegetarian options.

I would definitely come again for the peaceful location alongside the river with the entertainment of the youngsters trying to steer a punt down the river. I would definitely come back for the food - good quality, innovative menu, very tasty and good portion sizes....More

The food was good, the service was a bit lengthy (though perfectly pleasant) - understandable with so many eating outside including several large parties. This involves long journeys from the kitchen to serve the outside tables. Price including service £38 per head which I thought...More

The food was excellent and the setting is beautiful. Parking is tricky down by the restaurant but there's plenty in the road leading towards it - and it's free!

A works outing, so not the restaurant I'd heard great things and expected a decent meal, but the food was a sausage & kebab, a slice of salmon & salad. Not the best. The coffee was not great - too weak by far. To add...More

Trousers and shirt would definitely be ok whereas I’m not sure about jeans. Would have been fine when I went at lunch time but I think in the evening it would be smarter.

Description
You've planned an afternoon punting a la Sebastian Flyte - you've got the boater, the stripy blazer, the wind-up gramophone and the obligatory teddy bear, but whoops, forgotten the picnic. Instead of eating sweaty sandwiches, plan your punting excursion round eating at Cherwell Boathouse. Owned and run by the same family for the past 30 years, Cherwell Boathouse, as its name suggests is right on the banks of the Isis (Oxford speak for the Thames) in a truly scenic spot. The restaurant is small and intimate with a beautiful terrace but not twee. The atmosphere is buzzy and lively and there is a huge range of age groups. However, if you are truly set on a picnic, the restaurant will organise a hamper for a minimum of 15 people if you pre-order. What's cooking: Fish Terrine with a light crab mayo; fragrant Thai broth, crispy sea bream with courgette and carrot tagliatelle on a bed of noodles with a tomato and caper jus; baked breast of mallard with a cranberry compote; white chocolate and ginger torte; chocolate layered crepe cake.
