This is a review for the pop-up location at The Pembroke. We had visited the original location in Kingly Court back in 2018 (in the pre-Netflix era!), and having had a good experience then, decided to make a second visit at this temporary location. Worth...noting, the pop-up offers a scaled back menu which is quite limited in choice. Our family of 2 adults and 2 young kids ordered the tangra prawns, channa chaat, chilli cheese toastie, beef curry, dahl and some rice. The kids helped us out and also shared a chicken toastie. There was no dessert on offer. The food was excellent! As we remembered from our last visit, it really delivered on those authentic home cooked flavours. The stand out dish was the tangra prawns. We actually ended up ordering another 2 portions of these! (It is quite a small portion). Aside from a couple of Indian drinks like chai and faluda, alcoholic and other soft drinks had to be separately ordered and paid for at the adjacent bar area. Service was friendly and reasonably efficient. Asma was seated at the front as an observer, but not engaging much with diners. Our bill excluding drinks came to £134. Despite the limited menu, this was another great meal at Darjeeling, it was nice to see they haven’t lost their touch over the years!More

I had been wanting to try this restaurant ever since watching the Netflix show. On a recent holiday in London, I had the opportunity to do so. Booked for lunch at the temporary pop up location at the Pembrook Pub. The location in Kensington was...lovely and we were seated at a nice corner table. Service was attentive if a bit rushed. The real disappointment though was the limited menu selection and the food. With family hailing from Bengal and Calcutta, I was excited to taste authentic regional cuisine that is very hard to come by in South Asian restaurants in the US. Sorry to say the food was disappointing. There were no thalis on offer. I did not like the toasties. The phuskas shells tasted stale. The only item I really enjoyed was the tomato chutney which did taste very authentic, sweet and spicy and just as I’d remembered it from trips to India. Also, the chef was there and we tried to exchange some pleasantries but she did not seem too interested. Maybe things were a bit off due to the temporary location, but this certainly was not anything like the experience portrayed on the show. We had a much better meal at Dishoon in Covent Garden.More

Amazing service. First bite full of flavour. As you carry on eating the food begins to taste really sweet and begins to feel like your having a dessert. If the sugar level or whatever is used to make it sweet reduced the food would be...amazingMore

Having had a great meal at the DX off Regent Street, this was one of the first bookings we made for our recent London visit. Arriving in London, however, we saw DX was relocating again and in the meantime, they were offering only a pre-set...thali. This didn’t suit us and we planned to cancel our booking. Then, things went sideways. I had a bad fall on the tube (there are TFL and police reports). This caused some disruption and - in the event - we forgot to cancel the DX booking. Someone called us from the restaurant and we explained our oversight and apologized. We were nonetheless dunned $100 on our Credit card. Should we have called? Yes. Still, this was harsh and disappointing. There are too many excellent Indian restaurants in London (e.g. Gunpowder and Lahore Kebab House) and we will take our custom elsewhere.More

I reviewed elsewhere and the restaurant argued that it wasn't up to standard because they were packing at the same time as they were doing their last service. Well, not the best idea... AMENDMENT AFTER THE RESTAURANT'S RESPONSE I'm sorry but you moving is not...really an excuse. Maybe you should've only started packing after your last service. We booked our table 6 months ago and were really looking forward to it. You've made our evening memorable for the wrong reasons. ORIGINAL REVIEW So disappointed! We went before covid and had an amazing experience. Ordered delivered chicken Biryani during lockdown and also found the food incredible. Tonight we went to celebrate my partner's birthday and what a let down. Last time we had an amazing Indian red wine, no Indian wine on the menu anymore. This is supposed to be a tasting menu but everything is brought at the same time without telling us what to mix and not. I'm sorry but for more than £50 a head, I expect to get the chef's vision and I was left with small dishes that were OK in terms of taste but no better than a good Brick Lane restaurant. Prior to covid, there was a real care to explain the food was from a region that's not usually a cuisine you find in the UK. This time round, no surprise in taste whatsoever. Before, all staff were women and there was a particular caring style to the service. This time, they were nice but too busy to chat or explain anything. Before it was an incredible experience that we couldn't recommend enough. Now it's become a middle of the road overpriced post Netflix show restaurant. What a waste! PS it looks good on the picture and doesn't tarte awful of course but just not to the standard they had set before.More

We were recommended to go here by a friend who lives in London. The reviews looked great and we like Indian food, so we reserved a table far in advance. Great communication with restaurant. Beautiful setting. Lively and great location. Perhaps the true authenticity of...the food was lost on us, as everything was very spicy, even items that were not indicated as spicy on the menu. This is not a complaint, but just a heads up for others diners. It's obvious the staff puts a lot of love and effort into the cooking. $55 pre fix was only option for dinner. We would have liked another option for a la carte.More

We visited Darjeeling express for the second time and we reassured that the food and service has not changed. The staff were attentive and helpful and a credit to the restaurant, we also appreciated the complimentary chai offered! The thali concept has changed slightly since...our last visit and now you only get the choice of one protein (previous years we were able to sample two). This change however has not impacted the overall experience. The food portions are huge and we were struggling to finish. Each dish is flavourful, perfectly spiced and authentic. We recommend Darjeeling Express to all our friends and family.More

Our entire experience start to finish, from booking all the way through service was of exceptional. I'd like to single Jumana out in particular who provided the highest, most considerate and thoughtful customer/booking service I've ever experienced - she really helped make our dinner, and...the birthday surprise a very special evening for us all. The food itself was incredible, we've never had such a variety of delicious food as was served as part of the Thali dinner and are looking forward to the next opportunity to eat with you. Thank you so much, once again.More

I understand there is a story. As shown on Netflix. About a woman with a law degree, who wanted to become a chef. And only employed women who were not chefs to start with, who also wanted to be Chefs. This is what I'm told....And I cheer for a good story. But when you want 55 pounds + 12.5% service charge for an Indian thali with dessert, the food should be very, very good in addition to the history. Because it is a price that is quite a lot higher than one would otherwise pay. This restaurant is about Indian thali. You can choose shrimp, chicken or lamb. I chose lamb. As it comes a few pieces of in a curry sauce. Then there is some rice, some potato pieces, lentils, raita and a few other little bowls. Like the smallest papadums I've seen with a sauce and chopped tomatoes with onions. The dessert is a little hardened yogurt, small peaches in a sauce and a little cream. I have lived in India for 5 years and eaten a lot of thali there. Also elsewhere in the world. And this one tastes just fine. But it is expensive compared to what you get. And when you add something to drink that has a higher price than usual on most restaurants, then you have a rather expensive experience. Which does not quite live up to what you actually experience when you are there. The wait staff is good. The owner is present and there were some who wanted to take selfies. The place is central. The food is decent. I did not know the history of the restaurant until I got there. When I was told it, I think it gave something extra to the visit. But with a price that is far above the dining experience, you have to like the story and the fact that the restaurant has been featured in an episode on Netflix.More

We had an excellent night at Darjeeling Express. We had a table for 9, and everyone said how delicious the meal was. It was a thali set menu, the only choice to make was lamb, chicken, prawn or two veggie options. This in itself made...it lovely and easy for everyone! The meal came with such a great selection of dishes, from kachumber to lentils and chickpea curries, beautiful rice, some lovely fluffy puri, chutneys etc. It was all fantastic - my lamb just melted, so tender. We also all commented on how generous the meal was - I think we thought the portions might be a little on the small side, but as a whole meal it was perfect. Two delicious puddings too, just to finish the meal off. The atmosphere was great inside very busy and bustly, the staff were super friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Also though, the staff weren't continually asking us for more drinks etc and being a bit annoying, which some restaurants do. The staff were always around for anything, without being annoying. One of the nicest Indian meals that I've had, super impressed. For me it's probably even better that Chettinad in London, which also does thalis, and is amazing. Price wise, the thalis are £55 per head. It's definitely worth it for me, when you see how much work has gone in to it - 10 dishes I think, great service etc. So maybe not a weekly place to visit for some price wise, but it's 100% worth the price if you are happy to spend that sort of money. I booked months in advance (as trying to get a free date for 9 people needs advanced planning!), but I believe that they get booked up for weeks ahead, so worth bearing this in mind.More
