City location gives it an overblown sense of it's own self-importance. Overpriced, mediocre food & snobbish, unfriendly staff. Wouldn't recommend.

We were at a business meeting in central and needed somewhere to eat afterwards. The Don is a great place. It's seems to be split over a couple of buildings (not sure if one isn't a pub). The restaurant is very nice. Great, traditional decor and a fine menu. We were offered a special deal in the menu, but no... More

This is one of the better restaurants I've visited this year. I started with the roasted scallops, continued with the monkfish wrapped in serrano ham and finished with the Apple millefeuille. All were of a very high standard. The service was excellent and the sommelier really knew his wines and was happy to recommend pairing with our food.

I have not eaten at the Don Restaurant for about a year and in my review then I was disappointed from previous visits. Sadly, I do not feel the Don has improved. The service we received was lack lustre and the food okay but could be much better. As a lunch venue it is acceptable, but that is not an... More

I visited The Don in May for the first time. The occasion was a wine tasting dinner. I have been to several of these events at The Crypt in Ely place organized by The Bleeding Heart Restaurant and have always thoroughly enjoyed them. I met my guests in The Sign of the Don Bar on the other side of the... More

Firstly- they need to slow down. Our lunch was almost over before we sat down. Secondly - the food was warm rather than hot. all the more surprising in view of the speed at which is appeared. my ravioli starter was pleasant but I think the crispy bacon garnish had been crispy for some time. The dish had a reheated... More

Starter was very good. Crab and avocado with lemon grass dressing. I think the lemon grass dressing was actually just lemon. Monkfish main was nice, but very small. Ribeye steak was tasty, but it was steak and chips. Dessert was far too sweet and uninspiring. I was told on arrival that we could put the pre-dinner drinks from the bar... More

Business dinner mid week - not crowded but fairly busy. Food really nice and good wine choice. Pretty good service too.

Description
Tucked away in a tiny courtyard at the heart of the City of London, in the historic Sanderman Port Cellars, The Don is an elegant retreat with superb modern art throughout. Famous for its service and style, as well as its stunning wine list, The Don has won a Wine Spectator Award every year since 2000. Listed in the Hardens, Square Meal and Good Food Guides, The Don is recommended for its modern, quality Gallic cuisine accompanied by London's largest selection of ports and sherries. Bright and spacious, the restaurant's interior is highlighted by its stunning double height wine tower and seven large windows that open up on to the small courtyard. For a truly historic atmosphere, you can also wine and dine in the bistro, previously a wine cellar where Port and sherry were bottled for over 200 years. The cosy dining area has retained the authentic thick-vaulted brick walls and ceiling from this era, and along with its small bar, the bistro is an excellent destination for a relaxed lunch or supper with friends and colleagues.

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
