The MICHELIN Plate: Good cooking
Comfortable restaurant; one of our most delightful places.
Established by Thomas Rule in 1798, Rules is a Covent Garden institution and the oldest restaurant in London. Tuxedoed waiters glide around the formal interior, decorated with antique sketches, where plush banquettes offer a discreet retreat from the main dining room. The whole-hearted menu of traditional British food specialises in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings, featuring game birds, roe deer and Belted Galloway beef fresh from the establishment's own High Pennines estate. The wine list is a French-led affair, or there are native draught beers served in silver tankards.

Unbelievable Experience! Wow! What a great night from start to finish. From the service when entering, through to the end of the night with a guided tour of the restaurants areas that have featured in films over the years, exceptional throughout. The menu is extensive...with lots of choice, and the dishes we chose were delicious! The red wine to match my roast beef was amazing. Our waitress was so friendly and professional, and made us feel very welcome! Thank you - we will return again soon!More

With 4 friends yesterday we enjoyed a wonderful lunch in this classic restaurant. The drinks, food and service is excellent. If you want a place for a special iccsdduon, this is it.

Great restaurant with an unbelievable atmosphere oozing charm and nostalgia living up to its reputation of being the oldest restaurant in London. The service was impeccable but the food, while very good it just didn’t live up to it’s reputation. Oysters were very average and...3 of our oysters had small bits of shell inside. While every other pub in London is fully stocked, Rules had “run out” of London Pride and Guinness (served in a silver tankard is synonymous with Rules). Aside from that, the rest of the food was excellent.More

Three of us went to Rules for our first visit since the lockdowns. The food, ambience and staff were excellent as ever. Rules has never dissapointed. Looking forward to our next trip to London and our next visit to Rules.

Totally average. From the welcome, to the service , to the food. The steak was dry, the grouse ok, the highlight was the venue itself, full of life and history and wonder. If you want to experience it’s history go. If you want great food...and awesome service of a 5 star restaurant go somewhere else.More

Food, ambiance, service, choice and table appointments were all superlative. Like tea tastes better in a china cup, London Pride greatly is enhanced by the way it was served in a tankard

I'm so pleased this restaurant was recommended to us. We booked a table for Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary and couldn't have wished for a better evening: Great atmosphere, funny and engaging staff, and most importantly excellent food. We'll definitely be returning!

1st time in London , we’d been walking alday & came along this beautiful restaurant, walked in off the street, we couldn’t believe how lucky what a great find it was.. the most friendliest waitress long blonde hair in a pony tale went above &...beyond she was amazing, food was all delicious, when we’d finished we went upstairs to the cocktail bar which was also very good. Couldn’t believe we’d just walked into this mitchellin star restaurant….More

I would probably not take a 1 year old, table near us had a 5/6 year old who was extremely well behaved so no problem.
