Small, chaotic old bad quite pricey. It was depicted to me as one of the best place for steaks in London, I am very disappointed. Took a rump steak and trust me I never ate such a dry steak in all my life, tasteless, dry, over cooked on the outer part. I still believe you can find good steaks like... More

Fantastic beef and the full Guinea Grill is second to none. If you like traditional British food with great service and a first glass bottle of red, then this is for you. If you like contemporary Asian fusion type of food, please don't go - you'll only be disappointed!

I organised a business dinner in this well known venue. I have given our experience 4 out of despite the poor service and being made to wait 8 minutes to get are table. The food was great the service was not , but still worth a visit. The venue is tiny and tables tight. So make sure if when you... More

I've been to the Guinea twice now. The first was a professional dinner, with an associate who claimed this to be the best steak in London. I was sceptical - having been a solid patron of Goodmans when the choice is mine, I didn't think I was going to do better. He insisted though, and never one to turn down... More

This is a quintessentially classy English location. It’s small, dating back to the 15th century according to the maitre d’; its atmosphere is muted, but that only means polite and not dull; there is the absolutely minimum of fuss from the waiting staff, and they largely leave you alone to enjoy your immaculately-cooked steak and top-quality wine. If you want... More

Visited in the evening with work colleagues and we had prebooked. Very busy place and had heard good things about it and one of my colleagues had recommended it as great for steaks and pies and very traditional dishes. Started out with 6 flabby and insipid oysters that looked like they were weary of life. Irritatingly unlike just about every... More

My first visit was in the 60's and I don't think there has been a single change to the layout, décor or food offering so it is still standing the test of time. It can be very busy and noisy both in the bar and restaurant rooms at the back. No lighting so on the dingy side and tables are... More

This is a lovely, friendly, efficient pub but it's small if you want to eat. I have only visited during the day and it can be standing room only. It seats only about 20 including the four bar stool, but its customers are mostly well healed workers so the turn around is usually relatively quick and worth the wait. The... More

We booked on the basis of other reviews from both TA and other sources. The Dining room is dark, dingy and dirty. No natural light. I asked if they were fully booked. No. Only a third full this lunchtime. At this point I should have gracefully bowed out. Prawn cocktail average. Gravadlax good. Chateaubriand roast for two:- Beef very nice.... More

The Grill and the Pub have always been one of my favorite places in London and I can't remember a visit where I didn't at least pop in for a drink However it is becoming something of a victim of its own success. As Mayfair changes places like the Guinea are rare and as a result they can become very... More

Description
In 1952, a tenant by the name of Alistair leased the Guinea from Young's and transformed the business with a very simple idea. He realized that following the end of the Second World War, Americans were beginning to holiday in Europe in big numbers. Tourists would often, travel through France and Italy before arriving on British soil by which time they were 'gagging' for a decent steak. A decent steak was exactly what Alistair provided. Prime Scotch beef from Aberdeenshire. Basically, there was no menu and no price list. You were simply given a knife and asked to place a mark on the steak to indicate what size you wanted. Suddenly the Guinea Grill was a hot ticket, film stars, politicians, world leaders and the wealthy flocked to the back room of our tiny pub. We're founder members of the Scotch beef club and we've been serving the very best steaks for 60 years. We've trialled beef from other parts of the globe such as the US and Argentina. They all have their merits but for depth of flavour none of them compare to prime Scotch and the finest of English beef. This is the basis of our continued popularity together with the fact that our restaurant is within a unique London pub. Many of our staff have been with us for years, and we place a high value on customer recognition and warm hospitality.

Staying in Mayfair

Neighbourhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
