High Timber has a warm atmosphere, lovely staff and fantastic food - perfect for a long lunch or evening meal. I've been twice over the past two months and I must say it has been sublime - the fish of the day is perfection and steaks are fantastic. Best of all however is the Dom Pedro with salted caramel ice... More

We had a very nice dinner here for a group of about 40 people. The service was excellent, and the food was quite good, with a few minor slips. We had a limited menu so we didn't get a chance to see the full range of offerings, but what we had was fine. One thing to note if you are... More

Welcoming staff and succulent steaks. Extraordinary wine collection in their cellar - and they stick to your budget!! Cheese lovers haven.

The restaurant is in a bit of an odd spot on the north bank of the Thames, but is afforded some lovely views of the Tate Modern. We arrived fairly early (around 6.30pm) and it was like a ghost ship, so we went to the pub around the corner for a drink and returned later when the atmosphere had picked... More

I like this restaurant, although we had the benefit of the private room downstairs - the main restaurant upstairs looked very hectic in the mid-December Christmas party rush (and the staff a bit frazzled). An interesting South African themed menu, which you don't see a lot in London, with good steaks. The wines are mainly South African and they really... More

Excellent food and service in a very busy place overlooking the river. Delicious steak and very friendly and efficient waiters. Will make this a regular haunt when I'm in London.

It felt like student canteen miserable place for the money I spent. I won't be going again that's for sure.

This was by far the best steak I ate this year and I have eaten a lot of steak!! The wine list and cellar are fabulous as well. This was a friend / business night but it would suit almost any occasion. Good food, the best of South African wine and great staff highly recommended.

This is a great restaurant to eat at for lunch if in the City of London, Walking along the north bank of the Thames. It is a short walk from the Tate Modern across the Bridge. What superb views across the Thames to the Tate Modern through the plate glass windows. A special set menu for lunchtime was very good... More

I was dining with friends and arrived a few minutes before opening time on a chilly day but I was welcomed inside anyway and seated. Lovely views across the Thames to to South Bank. The waiting staff took my jacket and were mindful without hovering. My friends arrived shortly thereafter and we had a lovely meal: they had the ribeye... More

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
