Had lunch here on my birthday (Valentine's Day) so I'm not sure how typical the clientele was Nice atmosphere and the restuarant was elegant and tastefully decorated and didn't feel at all niche, which a lot of veggie places do The menu presented was a vegetarian one and surprisingly had to ask for the vegan one - I would have... Excellent service, waitress was really knowledgeable about the menu and offered helpful recommendations. The flavours were unique, adventurous and delicious. Must try the chocolate brownie dessert and raspberry doughnut meringue. We'll definitely be back. Even my carnivorous husband loved it!

Ok so I'm not quite just a pie and chips man but most really fine dining is over my head. However, Vanilla Black has changed that. The food was fun, beautiful to look at AND delicious, with lovely combinations of flavours and ingredients that really worked together like ricotta and salted mandarin or the shiitake and crispy cous cous. I... More

First of all, it's neither some sort of modern hippie place nor an annoying hipster one. It's just a very elegant yet chilled vegetarian restaurant. The free mise en bouche and the Sweet Potato and Puy Lentil 'Dhal' were truly delicious. The Baked High Cross and Charred Spring Onions was sadly a bit too rich and the charred avocado a... More

My partner and I were excited to use a gift voucher given to us as a present. The setting was lovely and peaceful, if a little bit library-esque. The staff were all extremely attentive, the plates and bowls were beautiful. The food looked incredible and the chefs obviously spend a lot of time creating dishes that are unique, have unusual... We went for Valentines, knowing it would be overpriced, but thought it would be a great culinary experience. Unfortunately I was mistaken. The aubergine starter tasted terrible, and the fried shitake main was very bland. The dessert was good, but it's hard to mess up chocolate brownie and ice cream! Service was slow and unfriendly. All for the princely sum... More

Pretty superb. Staff was very polite and informed of the food types. It was a very nice atmosphere in the restaurant and I like how it's off a quiet street. The only thing I would say is there is no need for the quiet pop music coming from the speakers. Either have no music or choose something a little more... More

We were a little worried that given the type of restaurant, we might leave hungry. We needn't have worried. Food was delicious and satisfying. Service very attentive. Prices £31 for two courses. Warm and intimate atmosphere, ideal for couples. Try the nettle cocktail! Lager was served in an interesting miniature tankard engraved 1976. Our highlights were the flavours of the... More

2.15 and we have finished a meeting and want a vegetarian lunch. So we ring and ask for a table saying that as it is late we will quite understand if there is only a limited selection. They say the kitchen closes at 2.30. We say - we will be there before 2.30 - they say - No, we have... More

Absolutely superb! At last, a creative genius who makes vegetarian food exciting and single ingredients sing - thank you for a wonderful and memorable evening.

Your mother's mantra of "eat your vegetables" probably never brought to mind dishes quite like this. Vanilla Black restaurant, originally from York but now located in the City of London near Chancery Lane, smashes the stereotype of bland, lentil-laden hippie dishes. Instead, Vanilla Black takes a modern, imaginative and ambitious approach to vegetarian cuisine. Result? It is the only vegetarian restaurant in London that's recommended in the Michelin Guide. At Vanilla Black, it's not "vegetarian cooking", it's "vegetable cuisine". The dining areas are spacious and done with art deco-esque flair, Vanilla Black's cool and comfortable dining room sets the stage for its innovative cuisine. Dishes such as hickory smoked duck egg and Ducketts Caerphilly pudding and sweet potato vindaloo with saffron risotto are sure to make an impression on even the most diehard carnivore. Vanilla Black's desserts like carrot cake and orange sorbet with crystallised coriander delight the palate.

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
