Booked an afternoon cream tea. It was better than some we have had in Liverpool but the delicacy of the food was spolit by the over-large and crusty roll with roast beef and horse radish. Likewise, the scones were too rubbery and doughy rather than crumbly. We had recently watched a Paul Hollywood programme where he returned to a restaurant he'd worked at to show them how it's done. It was a good guide for what to expect anywhere. TLCW, a great restaurant and location, gets 3/5 for this expereince though. Just needs a couple of tweaks and it will be first class.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent visit to us here at the London Carriage Works. I am disappointed to read that some of our elements on our Afternoon Tea were not to your liking. I must not have been working this day as none of these comments were made aware to me; I can assure you if they were, they would have been rectified immediately.
The scones being rubbery and doughy are new comments that we have never received; however, we take all feedback incredibly seriously, and all your comments will be passed on to our lovely back-of-house team.
Thank you again for your review.
Kind regards,
Conor (Restaurant Supervisor)

I had 2 dinners here from the Prix Fixe menu. As is often the case, only a few dishes are actually within the £29 for 2 courses, £35 for 3, headline rate. However, it was good to see the menu changes slightly day by day. The starters are very small, and the "Onion and vegan feta tart" was frankly horrible - but to be fair, when the waitress asked if everything was all right, and I said it was like eating flavourless wallpaper paste, it was quickly changed for a chicken terrine, without fuss. The pork tender loin was delicious, but was at a supplement and still needed a side (again additional cost) to make a full dish. The cheese plate was large and delicious with chutney, crisp flatbread, grapes and celery - but again a supplement. Each time, with a small glass of wine and 10% service charge, my bill was almost £60 not £35.

Dear guest,
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thorough review on your recent visit to the London Carriage works!
Our prix fixe menu does start from £35 and can be at that price point if you do avoid the supplemented options. Our supplemented dishes are a marginally more expensive by £2.50 for starters and £5 on mains. It allows us to still offer a more premium experience but keeping within the realms of a menu that's great value for money!
I'm sorry to hear your disappointment in the vegan feta tart but I am pleased to read we managed to flip this experience around and offer an alternate starter in which I trust you did enjoy- Rest assured we have handed this over to our head chef!
Thank you once again for joining us for dinner on multiple occasions over the course of your stay with us, We do hope to welcome you back in the future where a very warm welcome awaits!
Best wishes,

The afternoon tea was absolutely superb however the attitude of the staff really let it down. The waitress who actually served us was lovely but it took 10 minutes for us to be provided with menus after having been shown to our table, and then a further 15 minutes for someone to take our drinks order and the staff were snotty and rude in general. I booked as a special treat for my partner for her birthday and just felt unwelcome and uncomfortable the entire time. It's a shame as we would've come back had we had better service. Not what I would expect for the amount of money we spent.

Dear Katie,
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to leave a review on your recent visit to us here at the London Carriage Works. I'm glad you have enjoyed your afternoon tea; our pastry team will be delighted! I'm saddened to hear you felt uncomfortable and unwelcomed; this definitely is a new comment that we've never had before so I'm shocked that this was your experience!
I remember personally seating you and wishing your partner a Happy Birthday, so I'm sorry that you felt that our front of house team was "snotty and rude"; I can absolutely assure you that is not intentional. I apologise that there was a wait on being served your drinks; as you can imagine the festive period is one of our busiest times of year and our team are working tirelessly to ensure every guest is being given equal amount of time. I can assure you this is not the norm for us here. If you would like to discuss this with us personally please contact us at eat@hopestreethotel.co.uk.
A warm welcome awaits you if you do decide to return to us!
I hope you have a lovely Christmas.

Went here as a party of four for dinner. Guy who greeted us said “you only booked for two but we’ll squeeze you in but you will have to vacate table in two hours. “
Just to clarify we booked for a party of four and receptionist was incorrect and a little abrupt. You don’t book for two when there are four of you.
The restaurant is lovely and the bar staff were bubbly and friendly. We ordered off a fixed festive menu which was pretty limited and uninspiring. Waiters were ok but we had to ask for basic condiments and sauces which should have been offered with the food.
Our food was served promptly and hot which was good but the quality of food for the price was very average. We had to ask for more gravy and our parsnips were undercooked.
We were then told we’d have to take our drinks into the bar as they needed our table for next booking. The bar was busy and we had to share a table with a couple eating which must have been a little intrusive for them.
We quickly finished our drinks and left.
Our bill came to over £260 for a basic set meal with drinks. We felt quite rushed and the experience was a little disappointing.
We would eat here again as it’s a nice restaurant and most of the staff were lovely but not when it busy as they seemed to struggle with numbers.

Dear guest,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent visit to the London Carriage works.
In regards to your reservation size, I can see on our system you did actually book in for a table of 2 online but I’m really pleased we could accommodate a table of 4 for you on what may have been our busiest service of the year. I profusely apologise if this came across abrupt, this absolutely isn’t how I recollect how this came across nor how I would want this to be perceived.
I’m saddened you felt your experience to feel rushed, we do as standard offer 2 hours to reservations and absolutely do anything we can to extend that time where possible.
I do recall offering extra of our delicious Jus and Cranberry sauce when I delivered your mains courses which swiftly arrived at your table with a second round of drinks.
December is a very busy time of the year. Our teams work tirelessly to curate truly great experiences for our guests.
Our prix fixe menu offers great value for money which runs right through the year and on a Monday we even offer a complimentary bottle of wine with 3 courses for two!
We do hope to welcome you back in the future. You
Best wishes,
Cameron

Came for lunch for our wedding anniversary and we left disappointed. Several big tables in for afternoon tea which made the restaurant feel more like a function room. White wine not chilled (£42 per bottle) so had to wait for wine to hit right temperature (which was after we’d finished our starter). This is simply unacceptable, especially when paying these prices. Food was generally nice (no steak knife given for beef dish). Wine was now chilled but had to ask for napkin to stop water from bottle dripping over table. No soap in dispenser in ladies toilet. Final bill very expensive. Sorry, won’t be returning.

We were really looking forward to a special treat but somehow, it was all a bit disappointing and expensive for what it was.
The food was nicely presented and very good flavours. There was not much of a choice in my opinion and the menu was full of nugatory descriptions that doesn't reflect the item served. The waitress promised to look after us but then different people completed various parts of the service, with hardly a word spoken. There was no rapport, descriptions of what we were to expect, poor knowledge/choice of drinks and so on. The desert was actually shoved in front of me, knocking my arm as I wasn't expecting it and just summed up the inexperience of some staff.
It could all have been so much better. I declined to compete the review card that was given to me as I wanted to reflect on what had just happened, to avoid saying anything unpleasant.
I'm sorry we don't share the opinion of the gushy reviews on here but when a large party of 20 people arrives near to us, it's hardly romantic, quiet or other descriptions of a pleasant ambiance is it? They add 10% service charge too and at £80 we came away wishing we had not bothered.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for leaving a review on your recent visit to us here at the London Carriage Works.
I am deeply saddened to read we didn't meet expectations while you dined with us; as you can see from our many 5* reviews this is not the norm here at the Carriage Works. We are shocked to read that your service wasn't up to par, as we pride ourselves on our personable and professional team. Our team are incredibly knowledgeable and are always at hand to answer any of your questions that you may have - please feel free to ask them to describe any of the dishes should you return in the future! However I'm pleased that you enjoyed your food and loved the flavours.
The 10% service charge on your bill is discretionary and can be removed if your service isn't up to scratch.
I don't believe I was working this day as if this was brought to my attention your bad experience would be rectified immediately!
Please don't hesitate to contact us on eat@hopestreethotel.co.uk so that we can hopefully change your opinion and give you that high standard of service aim to give each and every guest.

My husband and I came here for our wedding anniversary and I’m so glad we did. We’d visited about 12 years ago and it’s always been a restaurant we talked about coming back to and our 15th anniversary seemed the perfect reason.
We arrived a little early so had a drink at the bar. I’d been in touch with the restaurant to ask about gluten free vegetarian options and was reassured that what I’d chosen could be accommodated and when we we walking over to the table, I was again told that what I’d closed was gluten free but that there were other options so I was welcome to change my mind. As someone with coeliac disease, having choice at a restaurant is such a treat! Plus, the menu was labelled up with gf which always makes things easier.
We had the best waiter, Adam. He was so friendly and professional and made us so comfortable during the evening. Always attentive but giving space for us to enjoy our food and when we did come over to us he was lovely. My husband and I really appreciated the hospitality.
On to the food, my husband had the prix fix menu and had a sea bass starter, a full chicken roast and finished off with sticky toffee pudding - all for £32, an absolute bargain given the quality of the food!
I stuck to the a la carte and had the veloute to start, the mushroom as a main and finished with the mint parfait. Each dish was incredible and so flavourful. I’m not usually a dessert person but I’m so glad I got this one, it’s hands down the best dessert I’ve ever eaten.
When we had finished our dessert, Adam brought us over some chocolate truffles on a slate plate that said happy anniversary which was such a lovely touch and capped off what had been a wonderful night.
We definitely won’t be leaving it another 12 years before we are back again!

Thank you for your wonderful review! I'm so pleased to read that you loved your evening with us at the London Carriage Works. Adam will be so pleased to hear you enjoyed his hospitality - I will ensure to pass on these comments. We have eaten here many times but this was our worst experience ever. The prix fixe menu was unappealing, the al la carte was very expensive and the last fish dish on the bar menu had just been ordered by a table next to us which came in after us. We ordered a starter and a main from the bar menu, both arrived at the same time. The steak was tough and served on a cold plate. This was a late evening booking but the experience was a disaster. We will think very carefully before we eat here again.

Dear 452andrewf,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I believe it was myself who you were speaking to this evening so I'm disappointed you felt you had a bad experience. Our prix fixe menu changes daily so perhaps a different menu will tickle your fancy a bit more! Our Prix-Fixe menu is great value for money starting at just £29 for two courses - this is competitively priced with a lot of local restaurants in Liverpool. As well as our award winning Al A Carte menu. Please do visit us again to try our new and exciting dishes soon!
I am pleased to read we could accommodate your request to have the bar menu in our fine dining restaurant as this isn't the norm, however we try and accommodate everyone's requests as best as we can; so, I'm pleased we did! Unfortunately, our bar fish and chips dish was sold to customers seating in our bar area as well as the table next to you, as you highlighted you sat before them but weren't ready to order yet hence why their order was taken first. I imagine it's due to you having a peruse at over 23 main dishes across the three menus we offered you, as well as the 10 starters and 15 desserts on offer! I send my apologies that this was sold out by the time you came to order, as you have mentioned you were one of the last tables to sit this very busy evening!
I will ensure to pass the comments about your food to our chefs again. We take this feedback incredibly seriously. As I can recall, I checked back on your table multiple times and on the third check back, I rectified your complaint swiftly. Due to these issues you have highlighted, I compensated your entire food bill as a gesture of good will. We hate to see anyone who dines with us unsatisfied so I apologise that you felt like it was a "disaster". I can assure you this isn't the usual experience for us here at the London Carriage Works. Please feel free to contact us on eat@hopestreethotel.co.uk if you would like to discuss your experience further.
Many thanks,

A really nice place, food is a cut above the rest of the places in the vicinity.
Pre event meal in the Phil opposite, so fairly busy.
Staff were all really nice, let me order a preferred pudding of the normal menu but only charged the set menu price.
The set menu that offered great value for money.

I’ve been to The London Carriage Works many times, each time it is a fantastic experience. This most recent time I got the Stone Bass starter, Lamb main and Bana Cake desert. Words can’t do the skill of the cookery, quality of ingredients and excellent service justice. As with anything food really, it comes down to individual preference and experience. But this place has never let me down on either.
Is it the cheapest? No. Not is it trying to be. This place practices my mantra: quality is more important than quantity, and often quality isn’t cheap. I firmly believe the price is fair for what you get; more importantly it is great value for what it is delivered.

We had booked this restaurant before about a year ago and had a really good experience. Unfortunately this time it didn’t live up to the same standards. Prior to arrival when I booked the restaurant I asked for limited salt on my food. I had ordered the turkey roast dinner and upon eating the food I noticed there had been a lot of seasoning added. It wasn’t expectable, I did have to take it back and did order an alternative main course which the waitress organised for me which had minimal salt. It’s very clear that my dietary requirements were not listened to. Further to this, a suggestion should have been made to warm the dish up for the other person whilst waiting on the food that’s being replaced.

Dear Mr Hughes,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent visit to the London Carriage works.
I am saddened to read your review didn't match that of previous experiences. Your message absolutely was relayed to our kitchen team who did their utmost to facilitate your request. As explained we do season in layers over the cooking of our dishes but no extra seasoning was added as requested.
My colleague did offer to keep your guests food warm whilst we prepared your replacement dish but did insist that she did not want to do this. I was pleased to hear your full meal was replaced and complimentary desserts were received.
We do hope this doesn't deter your from future visits and look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

Second visit for Christmas Day lunch. As previously, it did not disappoint. Crackers and champagne on arrival made it nicely festive and the service was excellent - at times it felt like each table had three servers, they are that good! The scallops were perfectly cooked and the mushroom Spumante was a novel touch between courses. I opted for the wellington and it was excellent, with a lovely piece of fillet, but my companions stuffed turkey made me wish I’d ordered that - it looked so tasty . Veg and potatoes were great, with the nicest restaurant roasties I’ve had in a long time ( most don’t get them right, for some reason). I personally didn’t enjoy the frozen mince pie sorbet.. not sure that worked, chef? Nice festive effort though, especially the cranberries on top, and I did give it a go, but it wasn’t for me. The dessert trifecta was excellent, with the millefeuile being outstanding. The petit fours were a lovely touch but I had to order the cheese to go, we were all full up! All in all, a welcome return match: so good, we booked for next year. Recommend. Thank you for making it another Christmas treat.

Dear Guest,

It’s great to know that you appreciated the festive touches, like the champagne and crackers, as well as the excellent service—our team truly strives to make every guest feel well taken care of.
We're thrilled you enjoyed the scallops, mushroom Spumante, and the Wellington. We also appreciate your feedback on the frozen mince pie sorbet, and we’ll certainly take that into consideration for future menu developments. We're so glad that you enjoyed the dessert trifecta and the millefeuille in particular.
Thank you again for your kind words and for choosing us to be part of your Christmas celebrations. We’re already looking forward to welcoming you next year and ensuring your third visit is just as memorable. Wishing you a wonderful New Year!

We booked a Christmas meal for two persons, priced at £59.50 per head, but left feeling underwhelmed. I would have expected Christmas crackers on the table, but the atmosphere was quite flat. I ordered the turkey dinner, which was delicious, but needed more gravy. Not offered any additional gravy, nor any cranberry sauce. Small things, but would have expected it.

Myself and a friend had a voucher for afternoon tea, greeted with a glass of Prosecco, afternoon tea was served quickly and we thoroughly enjoyed all of it. It was presented really well. Staff were lovely and friendly and were helpful when needed.
Sandwiches, two scones (one fruit, one plain) and a selection of cakes, a glass of Prosecco and a small selection of teas! What’s not to love!
We’ll definitely return again one day!
