Had a fantastic meal here after a long day up in the hills. Food and service absolutely superb. More importantly the staff were very helpful and cheerful. Will definitely be eating here again even though we live in Windermere! Cheers guys and keep up the good work. Paul.

After a 6 hour walk in the mountains and a few pints how lovely to come across this great Indian. Itihaas was a perfect pick. Three of us had a fantastic meal washed down with Kingfisher. The food was perfect. I am a stickler when it comes to curries and this place did not disappoint. A special thanks to Miah... More

I just wanted to congratulate the brothers. The restaurant now has a stylish modern feel , is tastefully furnished and from the moment we arrived we were really looked after well. An interesting menu that is reasonably priced , we were a table of 5 and everything that we chose was beautifully presented, served piping hot and was very tasty... More

We have visited the Spice of Bengal nearly every time we have been to Ambleside (which is a lot as my boyfriend is obsessed). We've always really enjoyed it, but we were excited when we learnt that they had had a makeover. The new decoration in the restaurant is perfect, really attractive and modern. The food was beautiful and the... More

WOW, what a lovely meal we had at Itihaas last night. This band of six brothers have come up trumps with their renovation and reinvention of the old Spice of Bengal - which to be honest, also dished up some lovely food. The decor, the ambience, the friendly staff and excellent food and service all came together seamlessly. Thanks lads... More

What a great meal and great service to match. This restaurant has recently been bought out so don't be put off by any of the bad reviews. It's now called Itihaas. From walking through the door to the point we left we couldn't have asked for anything more. The food was beautifully presented and very very tasty. We were in... More

We always used to go for a curry here on our occasional Lake Distinct visits but this time there was newspaper up on all the windows and it's definitely closed down which is a big shame as we loved it here. There is no indication if or when it will open again :(

This has to be the worst Indian restaurant I have ever had the misfortune of visiting!!! Eight of us went there last night we were seated at a table just inside the door where people were collecting takeaway (despite the fact that the main restaurant was empty) we should have left then but having visited a few years ago when... Description
The newly refurbished Spice of Bengal is a family run Indian restaurant and takeaway providing exciting and exotic fine Indian cuisine in the heart of scenic Ambleside. In 1986 our late father opened the Passage of India in Keswick, one of the first Indian restaurants in the lake district. A decade later we opened the Spice of Bengal in 1994 and we have continued his commitment to quality cuisine based on our Bangladeshi heritage and giving outstanding customer service. All dishes are prepared with the utmost care in the Spice of Bengal kitchen, using only the finest fresh ingredients and our own special combination of spices. Just like our dishes, our newly refurbished restaurant fuses traditional with modern surroundings, giving a spacious, friendly dining environment.
