Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff. Portions were a bit on the small side so we invariably had to order side dishes to go with our main which made it a little more expensive than it should have been. Would definitely go again, though...More

The welcome was warm and professional, as was the service. The ambience was sophisticated, (soft greys, muted tones and dimmed lighting) but the overall effect was akin to that of a dining room in a large hotel rather than a small independent restaurant, it was...More

8 of us went for my brother’s birthday and the quality, choice and value provided by the Sunday lunch set menu absolutely blew us away. The service was, as always, outstanding too.

The restaurant itself is housed in a large building but is cleverly split into different rooms so feels intimate rather than cavernous. The interior is unpretentious and elegant, the staff attentive and helpful without being overbearing. Then there was the food. So often even with...More

Spent the evening at this gem of a restaurant. The food was exceptional as was the service. James the wine waiter certainly knew his job and complimented our dishes with the perfect wine. Each dish was of the highest and tastiest quality. You could taste...More

What a gem, we were lucky enough to be invited to a 60th celebration held in the private dining room at this fabulous restaurant. Not sure how it had remained off our food radar, but now firmly on our favourites list. From the minute we...More

Anniversary evening meal. Slight hiccup when they couldn't find our reservation, although we had received email confirmation. We went for the set menu, and chose pigs head croquette and mackerel dish for starters. These were both excellent, as was our main course - bavette of...More

Made a return visit to Thompson St Albans - and I'm pleased to say this restaurant just keeps getting better and better. For me, there's nowhere else that comes close to delivering this level of excellence and value for money. It was our wedding anniversary...More

From the beautiful glow in the window on a very gloomy evening Thompson at St Albans was a very cosy welcoming view in this quante little town. I was sat near a window seat which from my perspective was the best seat in the house....More

Description
THOMPSON St Albans offers a relaxed and affordable fine dining experience, without the pretence sometimes associated with formal dining. Here, you will find a classic and tranquil setting, ever-changing menus that are dictated by the seasons and a selection of fine wines, carefully chosen to expertly match dishes. Chef and owner Phil Thompson utilises his classic training, along with his natural skill and ability for creating delicious flavour combinations, that showcase his own modern style. The restaurant is popular with large groups and can cater for parties and celebrations. Alternatively, the terrace and conservatory are a great place for dining outside in the sunny months; the quaint Victorian-style courtyard, with trailing ivy, honeysuckle, shrubs and flowers, can host up to 20 guests and is offered exclusively when the conservatory is booked. Private parties can also be held in the 52-seater restaurant upstairs.
