We visited on Saturday night and it was heaving with people in the bar, but we sat in one of their sitting rooms which is open to both residents and restaurant guests. Drinks at the bar are expensive, the dinner was expensive for the size portions - this was all fine as dining at the Mermaid Inn had been on... More

Was recommended this Restaurant/hotel by someone we met in Battle whilst visiting the 1066 Abbey. We booked immediately and drove there for lunch on East Sunday. £22 for 2 courses or £26 for 3. It was a truly wonderful experience. The staff, the building, the ambience all 5 star. The wine waiter was well informed. I had the beef and... More

Enjoyed a top quality meal on Saturday evening. Really good turbot and three ways lamb, needed the side dish of vegetables though to make it a full mixed plate, hence the four rather than five stars. Good atmosphere too.

The building is amazing and well worth a visit for a drink at the bar. The menu looked good but did not live up to early promise. Good on paper but not so good on the plate. We chose the Pheasant. It was barely edible. Charred and very dry. The roast potatoes looked and tasted like they had been reheated... More

Thank you for your review. We note your fulsome praise for the unique Mermaid Inn. Rebuilt in 1420, she has been independently owned since 1993, and her historic charms have been lovingly curated. We also note your observations about the food, and the service. We can only apologise that your experience was not one enjoyed by so many reviewers, attested... More

As we were staying there we thought dinner would be a good idea especially with an AA Rosette accolade. But it started poorly with stale bread rolls though it recovered with the amuse bouche. We returned the rose Prosecco as it wasn't Prosecco. The risotto starter was ok though a little bland, but the major disappointment was the main. We... More

Thank you for your review. We note that you rated The Pantheon in Rome, St. Peters Basilica and the Sistine Chapel as only 4 out of 5, with the headline comment for The Sistine Chapel, “It was not as big as I imagined….” We can only apologise that we failed to meet your expectations. We did explain that the 20cl... More

I last visited The Mermaid 25 years ago and still hold fond memories of that occasion so it was with some anticipation that we booked for dinner there on our recent visit to Rye. Whilst the building may be extraordinary our evening sadly wasn't. We opted for a drink in the small bar beforehand which was quite busy with locals... More

We too feel disappointed. We look forward to reading reviews, to receive affirmation or to receive constructive feedback to support future guest experiences. Your review characterises The Mermaid as: 1. The Bar is a wild west saloon crossed with an aircraft cabin. Reality: At about 6.45pm a resident in the bar, accidentally knocked over a glass. 2. Our waiters are... More
