I love Dim Sum but Gars does a really special take on it. Light, different and extremely tasty! As well as the dumplings, the baby squid in salt and chilli and the cuttlefish in a satay type of sauce are fantasic. SOmeone in that kitchen...More

I was out shopping today with my daughter and we fancied something different for lunch - not the usual fast food or Italian. I'd never really thought of going to Gars/a chinese for lunch but definitely will again!! The food was exceptional and although the...More

Booked our table at Gars - we arrived early which was no problem at all to them. We were shown upstairs to our table and left to settle down with a drink very attentive waitress - nothing was too much trouble. Food was excellent

The food here is pretty good most of the time, sometimes exquisite, but this particular Saturday night a quiet dinner was ruined by a huge table of rowdy chavvy drunk people who were louder the drunker they got. Best advice - avoid Saturday night for...More

We took a party of 20+ people to Gars private room - which was thankfully air-conditioned on a very hot day. The food was excellent and even pleased my grandson (who can be a fussy eater) - who declared the lightly cooked sea bass with...More

A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.
