My wife and I stopped here on our way from Wells back to Berrow. We just wanted a light lunch so thought we'd try here. The place has been tastefully restored and decorated and the lady gave us a very warm welcome. We seated ourselves upstairs and decided on a vegetable soup and Somerset cheddar and red onion marmalade sandwich... More

We ended up in Axbridge on a Sunday afternoon after driving around the countryside and we wanted a snack and a drink. Hmmm looks like it will have to be a pub.. no wait that sign says open. We find a lovely teashop just off the square. Mum had Sandwich and soup and -me, being greedy the 2 scones tea... More

Thanks Tripadvisor. We were looking for a lunch close to Rookery Manor and tripadvisor showed us The almshouse. We're so glad to have stumbled on this place. All the reviews are correct. This lovely tearoom is staffed by very friendly people, the surroundings are appealing and the food is tasty and well presented. Definitely on our to-return-list

Situated in the square at Axbridge this tea shop is ideally situated for those cycling or walking the Strawberry Line. The menu had plenty of choice and offered great value for money. Seating is a little limited and it was very busy when we visited (Saturday lunchtime). Staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

We love this little place, comfortable, friendly, clean, reasonably priced and accommodating. Menu is delicious, staff are lovely, and such a lot of little things to look at. Definitely our favourite lunch spot. We always feel welcome and never feel hurried. Thank you all for working so hard.

We received a gift voucher from a friend for an Afternoon Tea at the Almshouse. We had to book before we went so that the food could be ready for us and to their credit, it arrived at the table within a few minutes. The Afternoon Tea was AMAZING and came with loads of sandwiches, cakes, 2 scones and drinks.... More

It's lovely to find a dog friendly cafe and we stopped for lunch. As soon as we were seated the dog was offered a sausage which she took with relish and became a life long friend of the manager! Our lunch was equally relished and we really enjoyed it, the coffee was excellent too. I can't have caffeine and a... More

We have visited this tea shop in the past and had good service and an excellent meal. However today the teashop could not cope with its guests and we were waiting for over an hour and had to leave without eating. I would recommend to anyone who has plenty of time! It was only two of us but the teashop... More

We were extremely disappointed to read your review and sincerely apologise that in this instance we have fallen well below your expectations. Your one star rating is exceptional and stands out as the only one of it's kind over our 5 years of trading. As a busy and very popular Tea Shop we are often full up so have no... More

As soon as we walked through the door, we were greated by very friendly staff, asked where we would like to sit (upstairs or downstairs) and given a menu each. Reasonably priced, and great food. I actually enjoyed their clotted cream too! The Tea Shop is also dog friendly. We also purchased a Lemon Drizzle to take away which was... More

We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit so much and that you plan to visit us again when you are next in Axbridge. Thank you for adding the photographs to your review ... if you visit again during milder weather the courtyard is a photographers paradise and with our established grapevine, various pot plants and architectural features looks very... Description
Our small, family run business is set in an original 15th Century Almshouse which is full of character and atmosphere. It is a relaxing place to enjoy everything from a simple cuppa to breakfast, through lunch to afternoon tea. During fair weather our secluded courtyard garden is a must see. The small town of Axbridge is found at the foot of The Mendip Hills at the edge of the Somerset Levels. It is just 2 miles from the much better known village of Cheddar with it's famous Gorge, cheese and caves. Axbridge is particularly popular with walkers & cyclists as The Strawberry Line runs through it's Medieval Square and we are dog and child friendly.
We hope to see you soon.
