We ate great smoked meat (half and half), great fries, coleslaw and pickle. And a beer!! Can't have that across the street! Had our own booth! Can't have that across the street! Our waitress was spot on! Loved the music playing. Felt homey!

The meat was good, the service was good, but when it came to the paying time, the owner was very rude about percentages of tipping and even told us to not come there anymore. We sure aren't coming back.

Schwartz's had a huge line-up, so we popped across the street, and couldn't have been more pleased! Diner-style smoked meat that was tender and juicy, served on great rye bread, with a side of really good crispy coleslaw and a crisp pickle. Perfect for lunch, and their menu looked quite extensive.

Review : Kaan D .. You should always tip at least 15% any restaurant that gives you service., I've gone to the main many times and always got amazing service the food is great.. You can get a 16oz charcoal steak for less then 30$ with tons of sides.. Coleslaw pickle sausage fries etc better then the keg or gibbys...... More

Everybody goes to Shesrtz's which is the best tourist place. This is less corporate and more authentic and the smoked meat sandwich is damn good. It even has Dijon mustard if you like .

As a group from Toronto, we wanted to end our night by trying out MTL's famous smoked meat. After seeing Shwartz's is closed, me and my friends decided to give this place a try. We had smoked meat and poutine and they were delicious. When we went to pay our bills seperately, we ended up tipping %10. And the guy's(most... More

Most people (tourists) line up across the street for who knows how long at Schwartz', a rival deli. Let me tell you that The Main is just as good, and a certified Montreal classic. Just ask Leonard Cohen (RIP) who used to frequent here. Order a smoked meat sandwich, poutine and beer. Everything will be ok after that.

This restaurant is a very good alternative to Schwartz's right across the street, when crowded, go to the Main... I always thought that the smoked meat there comes through a tunnel from Schwartz's running underground from across Saint Laurent street, on the opposite side of the street. Here, you take a smoked meat plate, that comes with coleslaw, fries and... More

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
