My husband and I were in Montreal for a vacation and my daughter recommended this restaurant. The place was very busy but everything ran efficiently and we never felt rushed. The meal was wonderful and We enjoyed it all but we especially loved our desserts - a maple profiterole dessert and a creme brûlée.

We came to Montreal for my friend's birthday trip. We looked through TripAdvisor and picked this highly rated restaurant to celebrate my friend's birthday. It was a big disappointment. The service was just ok. They do have menus in French and English but the one in English doesn't have prices on it. The food was meh. We ordered bone marrow,... More

We dined here on a Friday night. We were promptly seated and started off with some appetizers, the hard boiled eggs with mayonnaise and bone marrow where the stand outs. I had the hanger steak, which was very good, but the portion was smaller than expected. The creme caramel l'orange for desert was tasty. Solid Parisian bistro fare.

After being recommended L'Express by a local friend, we decided to make a quick trip before heading to the airport one afternoon. I was intrigued that the place was unmarked - only the tile flooring outside the front door showed the restaurant name. Inside, the clientele looked a bit older than I expected, but the place still gave a friendly... More

We have been for dinner frequently in the past .....service was polished without being stuffy or condescending ,attentive and alert .The food was delicious and well presented .Unfortunately the same cannot be said about breakfast this week .The waiters (2)were impatient WHEN they arrived to take our order and it took about 30 minutes for the small breakfasts to come... I went for a boys'night with my son. It was crowded and yet we felt that we were special customers. Excellent food and wine, great service, good value for money. To be repeated.

A classic french bistro with black and white photos of the staff doing it right for a long time in the trendy Plateau neighborhood. Staff and service impeccable and the food was great. Can be pricey but worth it.

Wonderful experience. I forgot that I was in North America. It really felt like I was in a Paris bistro. Food was excellent as you would expect from a terrific French restaurant. Service was great as well. Very busy and noisy place but this added to the experience.

Good food, excellent variety on the wine list and helpful staff make for a very nice outing. Decor is minimal and the place can have a crowded feel at times. Reservations are recommended as they have specific seating times. We were 6 with each choosing a different plate for both entrées and main dish. We tasted each other's and all... More

We dined at L'Express on new year's eve. Our table was ready at our reserved time with no delay. Although the venue is small, the background noise is pleasant thanks to high ceilings. L'Express has been a favorite institution for locals over decades. The motto seems to be: if you are excellent, why change? The food did not disappoint. Celery... More

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
