I suppose I'm a bit of a "snob" since I've been to Indonesia and know what the food "should" taste like. I was hopeful that Gado Gado could remind me of some of my favorite dishes, but there was certainly something lacking. I started with the gado gado (my favorite dish in Indonesia) but was disappointed with the flavor. Maybe... More

Fairly genuine Indonesian food, perhaps not the best in Montreal. Unlike the most obvious option, this restaurant is open on Mondays. Very laid back decor, almost fast-food like, but the food is clearly not fast food. Ask for sambal to add to your meal as the dishes are fairly blend. The braised beef was excellent.

This is a pleasant, welcoming, and relatively small scale place with very tasty food. It's like "visiting Indonesia" through some remarkable flavours. It seems family run and service is conscientious.

We were out sightseeing and starting getting hungry. We just happened upon Gado Gado just before they stopped serving lunch. The Indonesian food was amazing! I had a delectable Chicken and Lemongrass Soup and a delicious Mackerel with Red Pepper Sauce. My partner ordered Marinated Chicken and it was also fabulous. The service was excellent and I really loved my... More

I was craving some flavorful spice-heavy food and decided on Gado Gado. It was our first day in Montreal and even though the restaurant is in the midst of touristy Montreal, it was quietly tucked away. The food was beyond delicious (we tried mostly seafood and vegetarian dishes), and the staff super nice.

Loved the music, the variety of food, the authentic taste of the dishes. All their satay dishes are excellent, we found the gado gado (a salad) to be less strong in peanut than the original ( sauce was not as thick as in Indonesia) but it may just be to accommodate their customers. Loved the fish cake wrapped in banana... More

Tast food , great service. Place is uncomfortably tight but it's worth it. Get the mixed grill - get extra garlic sauce (side of potatoes) and enjoy. The puffy things were yum as well. Would go multiple times if I lived around here.

We were excited to see that they offered a Rijsttafel - the Dutch version of an Indonesian fixed price selection sampling a wide variety of Indonesian food. $36/pp. And boy did they deliver! It was a relatively slow night when we ate here, so the server (and may be proprietor) walked us through everything. We loved it and probably wouldn't... More

We finally managed to try this restaurant on our recent day trip to Montreal. We arrived early afternoon, about 45 minutes before it's closed. It was quiet, small place but the seating could accommodate about 35-40 people. Our appetizer was Pempek which was egg stuffed fish cake, lightly fried and served with a side of noodles, cucumber and dipping sauce.... More

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighbourhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
