Excellent brunch selections. Food was fantastic. Service was excellent. I asked for Duck Confit on the Gaspar souffle and it was graciously accommodated. Fantastic food.

This beautiful spot is a great place to stop in for drink or snack while touring Old Montreal. Close to the water, this restaurant has great ambience, friendly staff and good food. We were there for lunch and my husband and I shared the spiced olive bowl and chips with onion dip--both delicious. I then had the French onion soup... More

Later on a Sunday decided to try the in house Tavern at our Hotel, glad we did! Wait staff very helpful ad friendly, helped us navigate food, beer and wine. Selections were excellent, advice was precise. Poutine was wonderful, as was onion soup. Grilled cheese with duck confit was fantastic, overall a wonderful first taste of Montreal!

Mussels and fries were plentiful and prepared nicely. Mac and cheese was flavorful and filling. Wait staff seemed unconcerned about his tables.

This cozy, warm spot plays excellent music (at the perfect volume) and serves even better food. Menus are presented in both French and English and offer a nice variety of tradition Canadian and "safe" American food. Servers are attentive and warm. Coffee is strong and hot. Crepes are perfectly prepared and generously portioned. Bacon is crisp, fries are perfectly salty,...... More

We were so happy to be referred to Gaspar Tavern from Hotel Place d'Armes, after having unbelievably bad service and awful food at the many restaurants on the old Montreal strip. At Gaspar, we were treated so nicely with lots of attention and the food was great. The place is very cool and reminded us of a hip speak easy.... More

The Gaspar provides a convenient location if staying at the Auberge du Vieux-Port, which is attached to the restaurant. Also, it appears to do a very brisk walk-in business for other patrons. Our meals were excellent and an excellent beer selection.

I'm late writing this review. We (myself and three colleagues) visited Taverne Gaspar the night after a horrific ordeal at Da Emma's in Montreal in November 2016 (the worst: slow service, meh food, huge bill, sexual harassment by our server (who later yelled at one of my ten colleagues), no manager to speak with ("fire in the kitchen") etc. etc.-... Description
Every night, drinks flow generously as our kitchen serves up fresh, pub-style cooking. The menu: soulful staples, original cocktails and friendly service in a classic tavern setting.
The space, originally a 19th-century warehouse, preserves much of its old-school furnishings but with a few novel kicks. And come summer, we welcome the warm weather with our big terrace on rue de la Commune.

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
