A dear friend took me to lunch and introduced me to this little gem on Parliament Street. The menu and prices and not five star, but not far behind -- the food, that is, not the price. The decor is tasteful, the service friendly and sufficiently chatty, and the food tasty, hot and fast. Parking is only on the street,... More

This is our fourth visit to The PearTree since September 2015. It's become a happy ritual when visiting family in Cabbagetown. It's good food at fair prices and served by pleasant staff. We enjoyed Gilles' choice of Eartha Kitt on the sound system, especially. The establishment is a bit dowdy and that's what keeps us from give a rating of... More

We had lunch here and had a seafood soup that was very good. I had the seafood quesadilla and it was fantastic.

They have lunch specials - I chose soup and salad - was delicious and was very filling. The service was SO attentive I never asked for a coffee refill once - I finally had to say I had enough coffee. It's quite quaint inside. It can accommodate large groups.

We were here with a large group, I think 16, on a busy Sunday afternoon. Although there was some initial chaos with getting us all seated together, they were very accomadating of some of the special needs in our group, and service was good and super friendly. The food was good, with the only exception being a butternut squash soup... More

This is a charming restaurant that serves excellent good-value food presented in an original way. The service was very good, though we were there earlier on in the evening when it was not very busy. I don't normally eat desserts, at least not gateaux and pastries, but I succumbed to temptation when I saw the inviting array of offerings in... More

We hopped in for a late brunch when visiting Cabbage Town. Service was good when there is no crowd. Food was descent but not extraordinary and in big proportion though. The crowd started filtering in past 11:30am while the few waiter and waitresses went shuttling around in a frenzy trying their best to keep everyone served. Prices here are reasonable.

We've just had our second visit to The Pear Tree and plan to go again. It's a nice place for straight-forward cooking and salads. Fresh and well-presented, reasonably priced. Pleasant staff, too.

Pear & Brie fritters; crispy coating - yum! Steak: fine (although I am not a steak lover, normally) limp French fries with the steak; good vegetables French onion soup: OK but a little insipid in flavour Mushroom, spinach & goat cheese salad - delish! KInd waitress went out of her way to get a mango juice for 4-year-old granddaughter

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
