As someone who has eaten smoked meat sandwiches in many establishments, I consider myself an expert of this particular specialty. Any good smoked meat deli will ask what level of fat you want for your sandwich. Not this place. And despite ordering my sandwich medium fat, what I received was very lean and dry (and the smallest amount of meat... More

We had been wanting to dine here ever since we saw it featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, which, it is to be noted, has never let us down. This deli is as charming and Jewish as anything that New York can muster – bustling and involved – clearly a neighborhood joint. There was so much to try that we... More

So, when was the last time you went to a deli and saw mustard served this way (see picture)? Caplansky's a "throw-back" to the traditional Jewish delis found in Canada and America. We visited with our Buffalo cousin to see how this incarnation operated and rekindled our cherished memories. Is it perfect? No... but it's close. As a former Montrealer,... More

Visited Caplansky's with a friend for a Thursday lunch. We each had the Reuben which was tasty, although if had to be critical the bread was a bit soggy on one side. Service was nothing special. One portion of fries is huge and enough to share. I would recommend as the sandwich was very tasty and I'd like to try... More

Loved the OLD Deli's of Toronto, but all but a few are gone. Caplanskys has some wonderful briskets, Smoked meat, pastrami, all excellent, but he has NEW product that is fresh and exciting to add to the old world foods. They are all yummy, so if your going for a walk in Kensington market and feel like a break, Caplanskys... More

Five of us went for breakfast and for the most part the food was pretty good but not great. The best part of the meal were the blintzes that we had with blueberry sauce. I ordered the classic breakfast and the eggs over easy but these were overcooked and rather hard and the potato latkes were also overcooked. The beef... More

Casual diner type of layout. Service was great. Food ... not so great. Had the smoked meat, medium fat & found it tough, sliced too thick. French fries were good but they brought them out before the sandwiches. I would have preferred them together. Had the latkes (potato pancakes) & they were so so. Not sure of the flavourings used.... Definitely has a US/classic Jewish Deli vibe, with house smoked meat sandwiches piled pretty high, almost knife and fork, can't use your hands, high. Also high, are the prices. Too pricey for me to consistently visit, but I guess great quality food does cost more, but I still wish it were less expensive, for sure.

OMG this place is amazing. The food, more importantly the smoked meat, is to die for. Plus, who doesn't love getting a pickle with their beer! Make the time to visit as you will not regret it.

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
