We went to recreate a 1960s birthday experience of burgers and milkshakes, eating out on a summer's evening. Finding family restaurants that still make milkshakes in this part of the world is a chore, but the Armview still has them on the menu, and "delicious"...was the verdict. Two of us went for burgers -- one the classic, the other the lamb while another went from the beer batter fish and chips. The burgers were tasty and full of meat, made even better by the late day sunshine on the patio deck. The fish was good, but a little oily into the second portion. The fries were perfect and the Caesar salad was reasonable. The mains were so filling that we had no room for dessert. To be polite, the service was "relaxed" but it did provide a chance to watch large servings of nacho chips and of steamed mussels to waft by the table. Instant salivation. As to drinks, the milk shake was traditional and tasty, while the Armview Pale Ale, brewed for the restaurant, was a flavourful accompaniment to the meal. For those who want conversation and tranquility during dinner, eat indoors; the passing (muffler-challenged) motorcycles, impatient or incompetent motorists, and the sheer volume of passing vehicles (a result of road closures nearby) sometimes took the edge off the relaxation. But we would go back to explore the menu further. Did we recreate the 1968 birthday experience? For the most part, yes. Kudos to the owners for sourcing their meat locally.More
