We came to Harambe for our date dinner. My hubby and I love Traditional Ethiopian food and have been to many Ethiopian restaurants as well as had home made Ethiopian food. We ordered veggies and doro watt. When it was served to us it tasted terrible. Doro watt was very watery and onion (which supposedly being cooked for a long... More

I love sharing when I find a good Ethiopian restaurant! I got take out but they prepared it so well and so generously. The food was delicious. The waitress was so professional and encouraged me to come back and experience a dine in evening. I will certainly do! Apparently the chefs are from Ethiopia and have been at this restaurant a... More

So yeah, it's an ethiopian restaurant. You know the drill - "combo plate" + injera + beers. That said, the place is *comfortable* - it's the kind of place where can chill/hang-out for a while pre-and-post meal, and they're quite ok with it. The service is definitely on the slow side, but that's also ok - as long as you're... More

Two things special about Ethiopian restaurants. 1 injera is gluten free. 2. The best coffee. I ordered cofee and veg platter. She insisted the coffee came after the meal, and then asked if I would like it at the end Follwed propmtly that the cofee was no longer available... the injera is not gluten free by default, the option is... We had a vegetarian platter. Portions food seemed a bit chintzy and most of the platter items were not memorable. The honey wine had a weird after taste, so I drank only a couple of sips. Service was mediocre. I had to ask staff to refill our water because after having an empty glass for over 20 minutes, I gave... More

We had dinner here (2 friends and I) to try something new. I had never been to an African/Ethiopian restaurant before but always wanted to try. I did some research and found mostly positive reviews for Harambe and I am now part of that group! I was really surprised (because I didn't know what to expect). We shared a large... More

We love Ethiopian food. On our last trip to Whistler we stopped in Vancouver for dinner. The platter portions were good and the food tasted delicious. We left satisfied, ready to begin our holiday. Unfortunately, that night I awoke with terrible stomach pains and spent the next 24 hours vomiting. The sickness stayed with me for several days. My wife... More

Of the many Ethiopian restaurants in this area, our neighbourhood, this is our favorite. Ask for their honey wine and chef's recommendations for sharing plate. On a recent visit they recommended that we try the fish stew along with our shared variety and it was all delicious. We are celiac and will notice if the gluten free food is truely... More

This was a pleasant surprise! 20 of us ladies went in our limo bus to surprise a girlfriend for her 70th, and we all dressed somewhat in animal prints. Reservations are recommended, especially for a group our size. I've never been to an African/Ethiopian themed restaurant, but when my friends and I went here, we tried various items on the... More

Staying in Commercial Drive

Neighbourhood Profile
Commercial Drive
Commercial Drive, also called "The Drive," comprises of twelve sauntering blocks of modest and unfussy counter-culture. Straddling the line between sophisticated and unadorned, it is favoured by students, artists, writers, designers, and start-ups, and suffused throughout with a healthy off-beat counter-culture. The kind of neighbourhood which well-springs thought-revolutions and has the odd bit of self-aware graffiti, Commercial Drive has resisted gentrification in favor of continuing to build a thriving den of affordable multiculturalism. Once known as Vancouver's "Little Italy," it has also been the immigration point for Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Portuguese to the city. The resulting hodgepodge makes for poetry readings in espresso cafes, social debates in early-open bakeries, and eco-activism posters pinned up in the many multi-ethnic markets in the area. Commercial Drive is where you go to feel like a local, and if you have them, bring the kids – The Drive has a number of bookshops, toy stores, and attractions to get them involved too.
