We arrived just before sunset, we were seated next to the out door pool. This place must have been someones home at one time, They have added some special touches and it works. I ordered the tortilla soup which was absolutely amazing, the flavors cannot be describe in words. My husband ordered the scallops, the presentation was as good as... More

Being the #2 restaurant on trip advisor we had very high hopes for El Matador which were only partly met. Our entrees were both quite good - Filet Mignon al Chipotle and Chile Relleno de Camarón y Queso Oaxaca. The caeser salad was a bit ordinary, small, and not prepared at our table despite the statement to the contrary on... More

Not staf is missing, it is true that the staff has lowered its performance a little, in general the girls are excellent, I myself have had mistakes in taking the reservations, we have already organized, we reinvent and ready. I opened the restaurant twelve years ago after 25 years of experience working in various restaurants and looking for the local... More

Tucked away in a corner of San Jose is this wonderful little restaurant. Yes, the owner is a former matador. Limited menu, however very good food. Highly recommend it.

The atmosphere was worth the price paid for sure. This was a memorable experience and I highly recommend El Matador. Friendly and courteous staff. Don't be fooled by the location or the view from the street. Go for the Rack of Lamb, or the Chipotle Filet. We also had the Onion Soup, coconut shrimp, and Caprice Salad. The only thing... More

Absolutely perfect night. You felt you were invited into Pablo's personal house for an entertaining and romantic night; filled with live classical guitar music, specific dishes that are made right in front of your table (including slicing the New York to your liking of thickness at the table), and a comfortable yet very authentic Mexican "backyard" lit up with mini... Overall a great experience. Very helpful and friendly staff. Food was amazing (loved the chipotle filet and table side cesar salad) and the courtyard dining area was really nice. A really cool experience was meeting the owner, who is a Matador. He talked about the art of bull fighting, allowed my kids to try on his various coats and demonstrated... More

For those who love the big, built up, resort looking restaurants, don't let looks fool you on the outside. Yes, El Matador is in a bit of a 'seedier' area of San Jose. However, when we were visiting, there appeared to be some renovations of the streets and neighborhood in place. It looks extremely small and confined from the outside,... More

We have never been disappointed. Out of the way restaurant in a residential area is a wonderful experience. Owned by a matador who greets guests and is very personable it is a delightful setting. Menus in English for those of us not quite as conversant in Spanish as we should be. New feature cutting and weighing the steak at the... More

We have visited the area for 15+ years and this was by far the best dining experience. The filet was better than what we have had in the best steak houses in Minneapolis for half the price. Service was wonderful. We prefer to dine early (5:30-6:30 ) so we aren't rushed. Onion soup was amazing. Ravioli was to die for.... More

Yes, our filet of beef is angus choice from Sonora, take me one hour to caramelized the onions before to add the oporto and rib stock so our onion soup is like any good restaurant in France, the ravioli is home made by hand, just the way Bruno (my best teacher) teached me 28 years ago, thank you for your... We were surprised to find this noble place in an quite dark neighbourhood, away from the Tourist pathes of LosCabos, After crossing this mansion and passing by the open kitchen with huge fires you arrive at a poolside patio and balcony were dinner is served and a live classical guitar player creates latinamerican feelings,. Very romantic, Even though we do... More

It was certainly a busy night, the cook over cooled the fish and we lost exelencia which should not happen but I estimate that everything else was good and that you enjoyed our restaurant, I thank you for your review and your friendliness I hope to prepare a carpaccio personally in your Table at your next visit, More

Description
El Matador is the finest restaurant in San Jose, owned by a former Matador, Pablo Velez. It boasts Mediterranean Mexican dining. It is in a neighborhood next to the Nun's Hospital. Their Scallopine Marsala is to die for as well as the other items on the menu. Please add this restaurant to your list. I can't imagine why it hasn't been on there as we have been eating there for at least 3 or 4 years.
