we found this place the first night we were in san cristobal and ended up eating there for either lunch or dinner several times. it's small and obviously caters to tourists- menus in several languages- but it also has locals and regulars and feels authentic. chile rellenos, and pollo enchiladas were favorites. there was also a dish of steamed chayote... You have to go there at least once even if the prices are for tourists and do not reflect the cost of traditional Chiapas cuisine. The service is good, the atmosphere is very relaxed and you get good traditional love music.

Six of us went for a friend's birthday. Three people ate from the same anafre - varied meats and the other three of us ate vegetarian food. The three that ate the meat plate all got violently ill that night. It was pretty clear where they got sick. Unfortunate.

When most people love San Cristobal de las Casas and its claim to be the best place to visit in Mexico, it is in fact flooded with international cuisine and what Barrios de Jovel offers is the typical and traditional San Cristobal food accompanied by Chiapas traditional live marimba.

Across from the market, good food and great music played on a beautiful wooden marimba. We were there in the middle of the afternoon. This was recommended to us as a good place for local food. They clearly have a lot of tourists (their Mayan food menu came in four languages) at some times but this was the off season... More

We asked the Tourist Board if they could recommend a restaurant serving local food, out of 3 possible - this is one we chose & we were not dissappointed. From an English menu - we decided on something that had five components. A Spanish speaking American came to our rescue & suggested that we would find one main course between... More

Simple regional food, generous portions of authentic Chiapas fare. Very fresh ingredients - we tried some amazing broccoli and yellow corn. Try the local dirinks (eg Tascalate) and enjoy the marimba music. Not high-end by any means, simply good granma food at a good price.

I was greeted warmly by my waiter. He also took the time to explain which menu items were Chiapaneca and which ones were not. The menu is in Spanish and English. The waiter brought me totopos along with six appetizer condiments. They were frijoles negra, guacamole, a fresh salsa, a liquid salsa, pickled jalapeno peppers and one other. I had... More

This is a small, authentic place that we have eaten at twice. Both times were very satisfying. The Entrada/Appetizer is a bargain at 30 pesos ($2.50USD). The sauces are wonderful-one dish offered three different sauces. Try the vegetable rellenos. The tamale platter was interesting with variety of 5 tamales. I enjoyed the mole'.

We stopped for lunch today and had a great soup and a plate of mixed tamales and some local traditional drinks. They have live music later in the afternoon and evening. It right near Santo Domingo, so it's a good stop after the market and museum. There were many other interesting sounding local dishes and what we had were good... More
