All waiters wear samples of regional costumes which is very funny to see and there are fresh pressed tortillas.

This is a great restaurant owned by a group of Mayan Family so you can expect to find the traditional cuisine of the region. The prices are slightly above the average but you get a delicious, generous dish. I strongly recommend to try the tamales, red meat and the pozol (corn water with chocolate). The restaurant is well decorated. It... More

This place is a little touristy but good fun. It is set a brilliant old colonial building and you are entertained by locals playing the glockenspiel. We ordered the mixed grilled plate for 2 which was seriously delicious and gives you the opportunity to taste a variety of flavours.

I love the apetizers with the hand made corn tortillas and the guacamole, black beans, cheese they offer you. I had a corn soup and meat, which was very good. Unfortunately my husband had one of these pork dishes that look tasty but it had too much salt. The chef insist it was fine but I tried and it was... More

The place is nicely decorated. You could learn something about local culture while you're eating, but food experience is not as good. I don't know why La Parroquia is not even listed here, but that is a place where you could have an accurate local food experience at half the price. El Fogón de Jovel is just too touristy, with... Felt a little like a Mexican Chevy's, the US Mexican restaurant chain. The special chicken soup I ordered had giant chunks of a squash that were so big it took three bites to eat one and there were at least six in the smallish bowl. The chicken on the side was dry, overcooked, not good at all. I didn't get... More

Popular with tourists and locals alike, El Fogon is steps from the Zocalo. The staff dressed in regional attire and live marimba entertainment complement the extensive menu of Chiapanecan and other Mexican dishes. Meats were a favorite, especially the bubul and the parrillada. Impressive drink list, including cocktails with pox (regional sugarcane liquor). Service is attentive. We ate here twice... More

The restaurant Fogon de Jovel is located at the left side of the San Cristobal Cathedral's clearance and, therefore, easy to reach. Inside, you can get an idea of colonial flair like in much places of this beautiful city. That's one part - but the better is the traditional indigenous cuisine, or, like they say, 'Cocina Chiapaneca' . I didn't... More
