Was looking forward to a great dinner on New Year’s Eve with the family, several of whom were in Mexico City for the first time. We made a reservation and showed up on time. The restaurant was largely empty. We were seated in the back...and got drinks and wine relatively quickly. The restaurant brought starters we didn’t order, but the quality was good. We were enjoying ourselves. Then the staff began ignoring us. It felt like they no longer wanted to wait on us. People around us came later, got attentive service, and even got New Year’s Eve champagne, and their checks and left, while we could not get anyone to take our dinner order. We had to flag down wait staff even to get water (and it took 20 minutes to get a glass of water). No one ever asked if we wanted more wine, even though our bottle was empty. We got up to find someone to take our dinner order, which was paella for the table. It came in an acceptable amount of time, and someone brought plates and served us. The paella was okay. The leftover paella sat in a paella dish on a serving tray, with no heat. No one stopped by to ask if we wanted more from the pan. We had to find a staff member who came to the table to serve, and they served us the cold paella. We asked for a manager and one finally came as we prepared to leave. We said the service was terrible. He apologized but offered nothing else. We saw other tables were being served champagne, but none to us. We were invisible. We paid and left feeling like the restaurant did not want our business. The restaurant was about half full, yet we still had to struggle to get attention. Maybe it is not used to holidays? Or serving parties as large as four people? Regardless, I do not recommend Candela Romero in the St Regis Hotel in Mexico City.More

The staff is very attentive to your comfort and excellent suggestions. The paella ( both types) is a quick zoom ticket that instantly brings you to the shores of Spain. The bread alone will tell you that this is a top notch dining place. The...chef even gave us complimentary appetizers.More

This is a sensational Spanish restaurant with really amazing food. The choice of music is fantastic, the waiters are super friendly and the decor is simply great. I would not change anything at all, just had a truly wonderful time. Definitely recommend to others.

Great options, we had a business dinner as we were staying at the St Regis so very convenient. Food is great, but I'd rather go to a nice Mexican restaurant in Mexico, and a great Spanish restaurant in Madrid!

The food is average and the services is bad, for what you pay and expect this not worth a penny. The restaurant should be out of business soon. I’m sorry but it’s true, it’s a shame that is in St Regis Hotel.

There are much better dining options in Mexico City. The food is nothing to write home about and service is extremely disorganized. You’re better off spending your pesos elsewhere.

We started off on the wrong foot. We made a reservation through OpenTable for New Year's Eve. Upon arrival, the restaurant claimed that OpenTable cancelled our reservation (though no one from OpenTable or Candela Romero communicated that to us by e-mail, by phone or by...messenger pigeon for that matter). I am fairly certain the hostess has not had the St. Regis customer service training, but we were undeterred, and to the manager's credit, we were seated. But, things continued to go downhill. Visually, this place is on point. The indicia of a hip five-star hotel restaurant abound - interesting architectural flourishes, ironic photographs of people in hats, stylish, beautiful people sipping cocktails, a dj spinning. The service is drastically lacking. Cocktail orders were repeatedly confused (e.g., an order for a second Tanqueray 10 martini came back as some cucumber/mint drink salad), bottles of water arrived 30 minutes after they were ordered (when they were remembered?), dirty plates were not cleared between courses, the bill was wrong. The list goes on. And then there is the food, which is lackluster and severely overrated. Mexico City is a culinary treasure trove. For very few pesos, you can eat very well. A truly great meal in Mexico covers a multitude of service-level sins. Yet, Candela failed. We started with some fairly non-descript amuse-bouche. Miniature croquettes or something of that sort. A fellow diner ordered a tomato soup with sherry vinegar that sounded exciting, but too much olive oil overpowered the tomatoes and the delicate acidity of the sherry. Ever sucked a Heinz packet after squeezing all you can for your french fries? That has more tomato flavor than this soup. We also shared the restaurant's version of patatas bravas. These were edible. I chose a roasted pepper dish that had promise on the menu. Alas, the combination of the red and yellow sweet bell rajas with a poached egg so large an ostrich may have laid it just did not work. Perhaps a pablano could stand up to all that egg, or blistered shishitos and a poached quail egg - but as served, this was just a gloppy mess. I'm still baffled by the chef's complimentary soup that came next: garbanzo beans with some errant fideua floating in what looked (and frankly tasted) like a Cup Noodle broth. We ordered the short rib - actually cooked almost to perfection, but doused in a sauce, the salt content of which made me question whether I had misread the Spanish and somehow this piece of meat had been salt cured. The one dish that my dining companions thought was decent was the vegetarian paella, which the vegetarian in our group ordered much to skepticism at the outset of the meal. I was grateful for that paella in the end, though. I'm actually not mad at the good folks of Candela. If you read the other reviews, there are some who have had exquisite experiences here. I'm really mad at myself. With such precious little time in Mexico City, I let my eyes rule my taste buds, and sadly wasted a meal. I should have known when the OpenTable nonsense began that this was going to be trouble. Even at the St. Regis, all that glitters isn't gold.More

A truly shocking dining experience, at a restaurant that plainly lacks organisation, cooking skills, basic ingredients and integrity. Other reviewers have commented that this place is “pushy” with its attempts to sell Jamón Ibérico. I would go further and say that its sales techniques are...utterly unethical. After ordering, and having returned our menus, we were asked by the waiter whether we would like to have some of the said ham before our meal. That seemed like a decent idea, so we accepted. No mention was made of the fact that the price of this dish was more than three times the cost of a typical main course. On pointing this out to the manager at the end of the meal, he simply responded, “Well, the price is on the menus.” These being the menus that the waiter knew full well that we no longer had in front of us, when he did his sales pitch. Such an approach is simply crooked and blatantly unacceptable. My main course of “lechazo” (goat) was advertised as being accompanied by “papas a lo pobre”. We enquired how these potatoes were prepared, and received a lengthy and comprehensive explanation. They sounded delicious, so I ordered the dish. When it came, the lechazo was accompanied by two tiny, wrinkled, boiled potatoes. I asked the waiter what had gone wrong and, after consulting with the kitchen, he responded that the kitchen “isn’t doing papas a lo pobre today.” No comment required. Both my lechazo and my wife’s dish (“Aromas del Riff”) comprised 80% or more fat and were conspicuously under-cooked. Both dishes were inevitably going to contain plenty of fat, but this was a case of having to search out the rare seams of meat. On top of which, both were served cold - presumably on account of the fact that the kitchen had not been informed that we had been flogged the ham after placing our orders. All of the above issues were raised with the duty manager, who (aside from his comment about the price of the ham having been on the menus) was unable to offer any comment. He looked like an experienced kid - a rabbit in the headlights. It would seem that his colleagues in the kitchen were similarly clueless. Avoid at all costs. "Costs" being the operative word, in this case.More
