Nice little restaurant run by three generations of the same family. All food is fresh, home made, and prepared to order while you watch. They were using a machete in their food prep, which I'm guessing is the genesis of the name. We ate there...More

small family run restaurant in the heart of zihua. we ate at this place at least three times during our stay. food was prepared fresh on the grill. prices were ridiculously low for the quality of the food. the quesidillas were made from corn which was fried to add a bit of crunch. it was more like what i have seen sold as a chimichanga in the us. filled with local cheese, sour cream, fresh vegetables, and your choice of grilled meat. i thought the chicken was excellent. these are large enough that one will suit most adults, possibly two for a big appetite. beverages included beer, bottled water, bottled pop, and a fresh squeezed limeade. we went with a pitcher of the limeade and it was great. the quesidillas were only something like 15 pesos for a meal in a sit down restaurant. food was sliced with an actual machete, hence the name "los machetes." it was obvious that this was a family run establishment with three generations of the family working busily to provide the best food we had. this is on a quiet part of the street and it really feels like a small family restaurant far removed from the tourist scene. no aggressive waiters flagging tourists from the streets in this place. no surprize bills or upselling. just honest folks making good food. we also had the "alambre" with "camerones." This was essentially a shrimp fajitas. they grilled an assortment of shrimp, mushrooms, vegetables, onions, and other good stuff served with hot flour tortillas on the side. they seemed willing to accommodate custom orders. they definitely made an effort to speak english and we had no difficulty ordering what we wanted. my son ordered papa fritas (french fries) and they were made fresh from potatoes. i guess we've been eating processed crap for so long that it's incredible to see food made from scratch, start to finish, prepared before your eyes. you can definitely eat like a king on a pauper's budget in this place. we probably would have eaten all of our meals in this place, but it started getting embarrassing. the average bill for our family in this restaurant was ten times cheaper than the restaurant in our hotel.
