Found this place on trip advisor while driving along the A69.just a few miles north to Gilsland its a converted cow byer now a lovely little organic cafe run by a mother and daughter. All home cooked. Would recommend the vegan Thai curry and veggie...lasagne really delicious. We sat upstairs on the mezzanine snug with lovely views across the fields towards Hadrian's wall. We were too late in the afternoon to to sample the cakes (they'd all gone!) but will definitely go back.More

The two ladies who run The Scypen - and their massive fuzzball Bjorn - greeted us warmly as we arrived on a scorching day roaming the Roman remains nearby. Friendly service and good food, with a wide range of vegan and vegetarian options, and a...remarkably low final tally.More

This is a brilliant cafe on an organic dairy farm. They serve amazing cheese made on the farm and raw milk. We had sandwiches, soup and the children had beans and cheese on toast, all delicious. The hot chocolate is something else! Highly recommended!

This wonderful little restaurant just outside of Gilsland off the A69 at slack house farm, near to Birdoswad, serves superb organic food and a wide range of herbal teas, home made scones, cakes and sumptuous lite fluffy lemon Swiss roll with whipped cream on the...side. The food here has to be experienced in order to fully appreciate the wholesome content and mouth watering flavours. The breads are baked on site with organic ingredients and the organic cheese also is produced on site. If your a lover of superb food and great company, then you will find a welcome and an experience to take away and savour for a while. Your met with a smile and a heart warming AGA cooker, Joy and Bryoni use to cook there preparations. Highly Recommend a visit, don’t be in a hurry Bryoni has some great stories to tell. Truly entertaining.More

I just popped in by chance as I cycled past... and did not want to leave! I was greeted warmly, and before asking, the lady in charge refilled my water bottle. I settled down to home made bread, cheese and chutney on the patio. I...was made to feel so welcome, I prolonged my lunch with ice cream, imported from Scotland!More

We stopped in on a whim while visiting Hadrian's Wall. A little out of season, so we were the only ones there. A great welcome, and had a fascinating conversation about cheese making with the farmer! I had the BEST chocolate cake ever. Light, fluffy,...tasty and not too rich. My gf had proper loose-leaf Earl Gray, in proper china while I had a fresh coffee in a proper mug. This is a cafe as it's supposed to be! We also tasted the cheese and bought some, it's really very good and the taste develops as you eat it. Amazing! If it wasn't 4 hours away I'd be there every Sunday for tea.More

We were heading to Birdoswald on a Sunday morning to get a cup of coffee. As we travelled the road, we saw a sign in the hedge for a cafe so decided to stop. We had a very warm welcome from Mum and Daughter who...run the place. We had a lovely cafetiere of coffee with cream and some scrumptious scrambled eggs. The scones are fabulous too. It's very homely and far nicer than sitting in some sterile cafe owned by some big company. There is a solid fuel Aga behind the counter where the cooking is done. If we are ever that way again, we would take time out to visit without a doubt.More
