Amazing Barista he was very welcome and nice. Took his time making the drinks to taste which is great I hate when drinks are made rushed. Love the bottle collections in the room. Comfortable place to come with couples or alone and with friends.
I started my whisky journey about 8 months ago and started collecting & liking Chichibu (CCB)whiskies. I desperately wanted to visit a local Japanese Bar to try some interesting CCB whiskies. I asked around an online whisky forum and someone recommended Bar Country.
I visited...the bar alone. When I entered, the owner asked me where I was from and I answered truthfully that I was visiting from Singapore. At first glance it looked like a great bar, lots of bottles and the ambience was a nice and cosy bar run by an old gentlemen. I asked for CCB whiskies and was shown several bottles... I was initially disappointed that the selection of CCBs was poor (mainly OBs and no prominent single casks) and after some searching I settled on a newborn from 2008, an old Mizunara Wood Reserve and a 5 yo Hanyu Single cask (see 3rd pic)
As this bar was recommended & it has been in business since the 50s, I made my biggest mistake of ordering WITHOUT checking the price. This was Japan after all, the home country of Chichibu distillery... surely it would be reasonably priced at such an established place. To my horror, the bill came up to ¥51,000 (¥15,000 per dram)! The owner Uneda-San even had the cheek to tell me with a straight face that these were expensive bottles!
This was a ridiculous price and far exceeds the price one would expect to pay at 5 star hotel bars in Singapore, NY or London! To put it simply, Ryoichi Uneda overcharged me. I was naive (and overly trusting) and there was nothing I could do after I’d already consumed the drinks.
I visited another bar and showed the bartender my orders from Bar Country. When I asked him to make a guess on the bar bill, he estimated it to cost ¥8,000 (no where close to the ¥51,000 I was charged). To put things into context, I had a far superior Hanyu dram (a 26 year old single cask from 1988) for ¥8000 at the second bar (see pic #3) which was about half the price of the lower end product sold at Bar Country (5 year old from 2000).
Maybe Uneda-San is good to his regulars or foreigners who come with local Japanese... but one thjng’s for sure, this Bar and it’s owner will not hesitate to rip you off of given an opportunity.
Visit at your peril... there are better and more honest bar owners in Osaka.More
This bar lived up to the reviews and more. If you love whisky, or just cool/unique bars, then stop by here for sure.
The owner is a wonderfully friendly and knowledgeable man who can lead you on a whisky exploration. The seasonal fruit cocktails were...dangerously delicious but the variety of whisky is really what sets this place apart. If I ever come back to Osaka, I will definitely return here and highly recommend it to anyone I hear is traveling to Japan.More
This place is amazing. I've been to some of the nicest distilleries in the US for bourbon and whiskey and this place is amazing. There's quite literally thousands of bottles lining the walls, floor and bar. If I could I would move in upstairs. If...you love whiskey, a quiet old timey feel or just booze in general you should definitely visit this place.More
