We find a particular joy in dining alongside the french on their lunch breaks. A relais offers the epitome of a typical French lunch, is usually very good quality and value for money. Le Male Blanc offers this in spades, has a charm of its...own a very professional couple running it and the food is just excellent. Enjoy.More

after reading Tripadvisor and enjoying chez pappy last night we popped to merle blanc for lunch. It was pretty busy with a mixture of workmen and people on holiday though I think we were the only English there. The owner explained the menu in French...at 14 euros per person. This included a cold buffet starter, cheese, terrine, cornichons, ham, various potato salads, coleslaw and much more. A basket of bread. Dh had tolouse sausage and mash, I had pork steak with ratatouille and son had beef cheeks with. chips. We were offered cheese but declined followed by a creme brûlée and pear and almond cake. All were freshly cooked and very tasty. offered and declined coffee (too full). This wonderful restaurant puts those in Honfleur basin to shame. Its good honest food. It was fresh and good value. I Bill for three was 42 euros for a 3 course meal.More

We were staying in a gite just down the road from this restaurant, and we decided to give it a go. It's quite unprepossessing, and the interior is very French cafe, but it's a real gem. It's totally run by a couple - Madame in...front of house, Monsieur doing the cooking behind the scenes, and they manage to cope with a very busy lunchtime crowd (lots of local workmen arrive in white vans each day) and dinner, with no additional help. It runs like a well-oiled machine. Madame is friendly and very jovial, and super-efficient, finding time to chat at the tables in between speedy trips to and from the kitchen to make sure that all her customers are faultlessly attended to. The food is brilliant value for money: starters are eat as much as you like from the buffet - fairly standard salad items, but good quality. The mains are very French: fish, steak, veal, etc, with sauces and a choice of fries ( lovely), puree ( mash - done in the delicious French way) or haricot verts. Then you're offered cheese: Madame brings a plate of four and leaves you to help yourself. Finally, there's a good choice of typical French desserts: ile flottante, pain perdu, fromage blanc, salad de fruits, flan coco, etc. All this for just 13€ 50 at lunchtime, and a more sophisticated menu at 18€50 for dinner. Plus you get a big basket of bread, and for us Brits there's butter available by the buffet! You leave feeling over-indulged, but not ripped off ( which for us was wonderful after spending 3 days in Paris before arriving at Honfleur). Total treasure of a place. Not open on weekends though, and dinner was only available on Friday evening when we were there. A real taste of everyday France.More

My family was referred to this restaurant by the local fire department. Otherwise we would have never found it. We came in for a late lunch. Their prices are good for the amount of food you get. Salad/appetizer bar, main course with several dishes to...choose from, cheese, dessert, and the local apple drink were all part of the €15 we paid per person. Fortunately for us there was a very nice couple at the table next to us who helped with the translation between us and the waitress/owner/daughter. We would have eaten, but her help was welcomed. It was a lot of fun seeing how the locals do lunch. If you're in the area and want a little more down to earth French experience, give them a try.More

We came across this place by sheer chance. The food looked good and a lot of local workmen were having lunch there. The host was very friendly and made us welcome although we did not see any other staff helping her. Could do with a...bit of a makeover but would not stop us from returning.More

We decided to "give it a go"...and, for us (a family of four adults), it was a hoot, a real taste of unpretentious France and the combination of locals, a bunch of telephone engineers and local electricians etc enjoying a four course meal on a...workday - was great. Owner's wife delightful and put up with our terrible french with good humour. Buffer starters great. Pork and Cider, Tourguile (rice pudding) and cheeses and coffees all top notch - great sauces and very "Home Cooking" - all for 12Euros 90 each (drinks extra but the "pichet" of cidre was local). Don't expect airs and graces, but that was one of the best meals we've had in France. Bit of a "find" in our estimation but do allow 2hrs to eat all the food and to stagger away full and satiated!More

Nothing special. Nice welcome, it was very quiet but the week before xmas. Good selection of buffet starter. We had curried chicken and jamboneau, both served with home-made chips. Both ok, but nothing special. Fromage for me - ok - dessert was a fairly standard...choice of tarte, creme, glaces etc. Coffee quite nice. All said, 13e for the formule was reasonable value, but as said, nothing special.More
