This restaurant is one of our favourite treats. The food is exceptional . I rarely ordr steak out because it can be subjective... was it a good cut, was it tender, was it cooked to your liking ?? Yes .... The duck was amazing also. ..and Paul guides you through a wine selection which is extensive eclectic educational and entertaining. Yup.... I could sit there all evening. A wonderful dining experience.

We are from Mayo for last 8 years and constantly pass this restaurant but only stopped for lunch this week, very impressed with service and food. We have 2 young kids age 4 and 5 and all loved the lunch.. Great selection and quality food. Very relaxing but also quick to serve given we were on route home after holidays. The best part was on leaving to discover their wine selection, wow, and the owner very knowledgeable recommended us two bottles of red. One we just had with a home steak dinner and it was an amazing bottle of red, one of the best I've had in a long time, I savoured every drop, expensive but worth every penny. Thank you and we will be back.. For food on route and some wine purchases!!

I want to begin by saying the food we got was lovely . My husband enjoyed a main course of squid ( which was on as a starter). He explained that this dish appealed to him & the waitresse organised a double portion of starter. He really enjoyed it. He ordered a side of garlic potatoes. He described as very tasty and nice garlic flavours. I ordered the onion & mixed cheese tart. This is a starter. The only main vegetarian dish is pasta which personally always disappoints me. The tart was "divine" & if it could be done a little larger with salad this could be a great main course. I ordered side salad with starter portion & all presented beautifully. Staff member very friendly & polite. Regarding wine we tasted one glass of house white which we enjoyed so ordered a bottle. I had a look at selection of wines on shop front all looked good & very nice selections of tapa food. We had a plesant evening & while we did not order desert we relaxed while we finished our wine.

What a stunning little gem! We spotted the Purple Onion during a weekend stay in the village, fortunately they were open on the Sunday evening. Loved the setting, choose your wine off the shop floor and shop between courses!😄 The food was simple stunning! Fantastic menu, quality of produce and very well executed. Hopefully they will be open in between Christmas and New Year when we return to Ireland.

Arrived for lunch Bank holiday Monday at approx 1:40 pm, at first we were then only people there, asked for a table for 3, were seated at a table for 6 persons. Waitress was courteous though not over friendly. Proceeded to order drinks, requested cordial to which I was told they don't sell cordial so opted for 7 up instead to be told that there was none, suggested club orange which I was told was not available, settled for water. Lunch menu was limited but expensive, just 4 choices so everyone ordered chicken burger, meal portion small though chips were nice. As soon as we had finished the main course the waitress lifted our plates and asked if we wanted desert, a second waitress then asked us the same question. We ordered desert and coffee, finished this and sat for 15 minutes chatting. The waitress removed our dishes and proceed to lift our coffee cups though we had not finished, I watched as the owner had a word with the waitress while looking down at our table, I realised that they were trying to push us to finish and leave, the waitress then dropped the bill down to our table and asked if I want to pay. We assumed that there was a queue of people waiting on tables but as we left we could see that there was nobody waiting for a table. Last time I will set foot in this place, see how they survive for rest of the year if they keep up the rude attitude. Also €80 is a bit steep for average food!

Food really excellent and I must stress that !!!! but the rest of the experience let it down. No bread with starter. We didn’t get what was on the menu no flat cap mushroom with the steak. Described as steak and chips and flat cap mushroom with complementary side. Oh the chips are the complementary side. Wine only sold by the glass No house wine. Needed to see manger to get a price on a bottle .. still on return was told it’s about €€ No price available for a bottle unless you purchase from the off licence and add a service charge. Pornstar martini tasted like miwadi would be better so serve up the cans of pornstar martini you get in Tesco Such a pity as food is amazing but for the price you’d expect perfection in other areas. No problem paying any amount for a good meal but clarity on what you are ordering is key to retuning clients. Made to feel like it’s your issue because the menu or charges are misleading

After being greeted by Paul who swiftly and discretly took our covid passes we were shown to our table to be served by the ever helpful courteous staff, and given two complimentary glasses of prosecco The meal was beautiful as always and accompanied by a great well priced wine selection, helpfully advised by the proprietor. We polished off the legendary cheesecake, and agreed we would return again, but that's what we say each time. Thanks Paul and staff!! Séamus 😋

This restaurant is beautiful and each time I visit I truly enjoy the fresh and wholesome cooked food! It offers a great variety where the staff and properitors offer a friendly welcome! There are great wines to choose from and are sold on the premises! I love this restaurant!

We arrived about 6pm on a Friday evening and were given a table on the understanding that it was needed at 8 pm. The restaurant was reasonably quiet whilst we were eating and began filling up as the time went on. The meal was great, the staff knew the menu very well and were very friendly and polite and didn’t make us feel under any time pressure. We will definitely pay a return visit the next time we are in the area.

I live in the East of Ireland but on my trips West I have stayed a number of times Nearby to Purple Onion. I have had absolutely delicious and very interesting food there with superb service and most congenial atmosphere and I have invariably recommended it to friends. I ate there on my last trip and I had a slight dis-satisfaction with my main course. It was was dealt with immediately, with curtesy and absolutely to my satisfaction. I can only recommend this restaurant with total satisfaction and praise for excellent food, excellent service and attention to detail (and tastes) which is as good as it gets. I want to recommend particularly because on previous visits I never had any issues with the food ( indeed the food was always interesting and delicious hence I kept coming back) but when I had an issue on this visit it was dealt with to my utmost satisfaction because in this business where I used to work it is important to say how it was and more importantly how the establishment valued u as a customer, to Purple Onion 10/10 . Thank you and I will be back on my next trip and indeed I will continue to recommend you (and your food! ) highly.

My son booked in early July for outdoor dining to celebrate his 30th birthday on 31st July at 5.30. My son in law went to the restaurant at 4.00 to drop off the cake and balloons. He informed Paul that it was for a family booking at 5.30. Straight away he was told the booking was for 5.00 and that we would have to be gone by 7.00. My son in law sent a message to the family WhatsApp group telling us this but my son reassured us that the booking was for 5.30. We arrived at the front entrance to be told that our table was inside which was not suitable as a few of the party had not been vaccinated ( 2 new mothers of newborn babies) Paul was very rude and accused us of being confrontational after we asked why he had not contacted us in relation to the booking. We actually left and went across to @theshannonbar who were so accomodating. The upsetting issue is that we have supported The purple onion for a long number of years and ordered takeaway meals the majority of Sundays during lock downs. Sorry to say I am going to delete from my Instagram and will never enjoy a meal there again as they spoiled my youngest child's 30th birthday which was a significant milestone in my life as a mother 😥

We dropped in by accident on the way to Dublin The restaurant was busy but luckily they had some cancellations due to storm Kathleen. We had pate..chicken and lamb All of the food including the veg and potatoes was top class. Nothing left on our plates. The staff were helpful and friendly and the owner made sure that everyone was being well looked after. We will definitely be back.its rare to find a gem like this... highly recommended

First visit to purple onion, it was smaller than I expected, very different, met by very friendly, beautiful young lady, she asked if we had booked, which we had, she showed us to a lovely table in corner & asked if we would like door closed, it was a beautiful Sunday so we were delighted to have doors open. She gave us menu & it didn't take us long to decide on our food, we all chose different so we could taste each others, with our own expert food critic in the party. The food was just super, tasty, flavours, delicious, the service was top class, Rachel I believe our waitress was, super, confident, young lady, I observed as she showed a new waiter, how to do a bill, & card transaction, I was so pleased to see her take time to show this lovely friendly young waiter how to serve costumer, with a friendly conversation & a beautiful smile. Very well done Rachel. Thank ye for one of my best ever lunches & days out

I keep coming back to the Purple Onion. It’s just excellent- every time. Today, I picked up carry out lunch for five - due to Covid restrictions only takeaway service is permitted. Starters were unanimously Chicken and Smoked bacon salad. Absolutely gorgeous. Every. Time. Mains varied: we had Turkey with trimmings, roast sirloin of beef, seafood pie and supreme of chicken. Despite being takeaway and having to be transported a few miles each dish was super. Flavoursome, comforting and just a hint of being able to “go out for a nice lunch” about all of them. Only one of the five opted for dessert. We are still trying to be virtuous for 2021! He opted for mini doughnuts with dark chocolate sauce. All I can say is that he got seven doughnuts and shared a single one between the remaining four of us. Bottom line is that, in very difficult circumstances, The Purple Onion continues to provide great food and an enjoyable “eating out at home” experience. Give it a go. You will not be disappointed.
