Met up with friends today for a socially distant afternoon catch up. We went to order drinks and as per covid 19 regulation's we had to order our food first.
She who must be obeyed and I had the seafood chowder which was rich and beautifully balanced with huge chunks of fish in it. No shellfish that I could discern but plenty of fish.
A ceaser salad which was generous in the portion size . Service was a little slow but all in all it was very busy.
The outside garden held us for nearly 5 hours basking in the sun.
The most striking feature was the silence. Although surrounded by a reasonable number of people it's as though everyone was whispering.
Food was great
Surrounding great
Good value all round

As a visitor on the island for nearly 16 years, felt obligated to leave a review after countless visits to the Royal. The experience is never anything less than the greatest service and the food is always terrific. Two visitors I had (1 resteraunt owner and 1 manager of a restaurant) brought down from Cork recently declared the fish and chips the best they had ever eaten and they are very picky eaters. Even during covid when only doing takeaway food and pints the place has been wonderful and always so accommodating. Can't rate highly enough!

We arrived without a reservation to fine the Royal Valentia extremely busy on a Bank Holiday Monday and really didn’t expect to get a table but somehow the staff worked a miracle and got us in. Then they worked another miracle and served us up some of the best scampi I’ve ever tasted… pretty much a mountain of it on a plate. Service was quick and the staff were friendly… there really was nothing less than 5 stars that could be given!

We had an evening meal in the Royal Valentia in September. We were placed at a table in the middle of the restaurant were I was sitting in a draught from the air conditioning in the ceiling. I asked the waiter what Gin they had not expecting there to be a big choice. He mentioned a few but said they had a lot more. I ordered a Hendricks and tonic. The G&T was served like G&T's were served 20 years ago in a limonade glass with a slice of lemon and tonic. I would have expected a little more after I had been told they have a lot of different Gins.
We ordered fish and chips and they were very good. We really enjoyed the food.
The ambience however reminded more of a train station bistro rather than a hotel restaurant. It was very noisy, draughty and generally not enjoyable .

My family of 4 visited here on the 22nd of July 2022 and the service and the food was really poor. We waited almost an hour for our food, the portions for the kids were really small and missing items and the soft drinks were flat. Our toasted sandwiches were toasted on one side and not the other! I asked for items they forgot a couple of times but didn’t receive them and when I complained at the end, the waiter blamed how busy they were. It really didn’t look busy and there were staff walking around looking clearly not busy. I would not recommend this as a place to eat. The atmosphere was not nice and there was zero ambience.

Would never recommend this hotel to anyone. Staff in the bar were downright rude to everyone they came across this weekend - a weekend that brings a massive amount of business to Valentia Island. Older family members ordered food, when the bill was requested there was extra meals on it & the male staff member was dismissive and rude about his mistake. A young blonde girl working in the bar/restaurant had nothing but short comments and nasty looks for everyone in the bar on Saturday. Avoid the place at all costs! Hopefully next year this event will be held elsewhere.

Fantastic hotel next to the car ferry (though we took the significantly cheaper/free option and crossed the bridge 8km away). The hotel is steeped in character and as a consequence put up with some very minor inconvenience- uneven floors, old locks on the doors and rooms can be a little stuffy and warm. Food in the bar/restaurant was great, as was breakfast, but the standout was the view over the water from the bedrooms at the front of the hotel - worth the price waking up to those alone! Staff were great and information on the hotel and surrounding area was plentiful…along with an oddly worded ‘price list’ of items that disappear into travellers suitcases which perhaps needs a review and update. But all in all, I’d thoroughly recommend this property.

We stayed 2 nights at the Royal Valentia. Rooms are old fashioned but are lovely, they have a nice charm about them, even if the beds needs upgrading. Shower was nice and the complimentary toiletries smelled gorgeous. I found it very strange that there were no curtains on our bedroom windows on the ground floor!!!! My husband thought the breakfast was terrible, he got the full Irish. The suasages were cooked in the deep fat fryer and the pudding and rashers were rock hard. The continental buffet was average. We ordered a pot of tea for two and it came with one tea bag and the coffee on offer was filtered and luke warm. The main thing I experienced from the begining were the staff, they were very uninterested and never seen one of them smile. Don't think we would stay here again even though we liked the victorian feel to the place, it's lacking overall

We stayed here for 2 nights. The staff are fantastic, so friendly and helpful. The rooms are nice, clean and homely. Breakfast was simple but okay. For the evening meal, we strongly recommend you get something locally sourced such as fish. Unfortunately there was no car park so parking was an issue but overall we really enjoyed our stay plenty to see and do on the island.

This beautifully renovated Hotel commands magnificent views out across the harbour to the mainland. Set in the picturesque village of Knights Town it is the ideal location to mingle with locals and tourists alike, soaking up the sea air and great Irish hospitality. On this occasion I had a pulled pork ciabatta, in a delicious barbecue sauce, served with home made slaw and crisps. To finish I had a home made scone, Jam & cream which was a delight. The young staff were incredibly friendly and helpful making for a great lunchtime experience. Already planning my next visit.

This is a fantastic setting to have dinner lunch or just a drink. The quality of the food was of a very good standard and they don’t scrimp on the portions. The staff are really friendly, attentive and helpful. I would recommend you book in advance as it would be very popular in the high season.

We were pleasantly surprised by the high standard of scampi and chips serves here. Huge fresh prawns in fresh batter and excellent chunky chips.
Friendly service, though the dark brown Victorian decor could do with a bit of brightening up.
We noticed on our way in that there was still litter on the outside tables. It makes for a poor first impression.
Overall highly recommended - an unexpected treat.

Tried to order food. 3 of the staff standing at the bar point blank ignored me until i finally got one to speak.she then told me it would be a 40 min wait because they just had a big order. There was 2 or 3 other tables max looking for food. Couldn't believe the bad attitude of the place. A pity as I imagine it gets a lot of tourists. Smile and be helpful Royal Valentia. Or get out of the tourist trade.
Couldn't comment on food as they aren't getting my money with an attitude that stinks like this.

Established 1833, it’s beautiful and modernized (except for the big ol’ keys). Motion activated lights, individual room temp controls, Wi-Fi of course. Great bar, excellent food, nice staff.

Vincent and Team Royal Valentia,
What can I say - thank you so much for your hospitality last weekend.
I had not been since 2011 and fell right back in love again.
You and your team are simply fantastic.
The fluffy pancakes on the Breakfast menu are the fluffiest I'v ever had.
So looking forward to my next visit as are all the swimmers.
Fionnuala.
