For some people finding that little spot that's hard to get to and hard to find is what overseas traveling is all about. If you are that person - this is your place. It's basically like going to someone's house....someone who has dropped off the grid completely and has a pizza oven in his kitchen. The pizza is homemade -... More

Folks this is a relaxing open air dining experience that you will never forget. The location is off the beaten track but that is the beauty. PJ's is in a very small village of 65 people in the shadow of the Arenal volcano. Ex-pat John is a warm and fascinating character that sat down, had a beer with us, and... More

We literally stumbled onto Pizza John's. It's off the beaten path, a crazy building, a crazy guy, and excellent pizza! We hung out much longer than expected, and laughed and laughed. A place we'll never forget!

Pizza John's pizza was absolutely delicious. John was even able to accommodate my Vegetarian and my friends vegan diet needs. Pizza John's is much more than a place to grab dinner though. It is an experience. Go when you have plenty of time to hang out and get to know John. He is a wonderful man that loves music. If... More

This little pizza joint is so much more -- try to hit it if you can! John is highly entertaining and his story is thought provoking. It was a really memorable experience seeing this ex-Los Angeles resident grinding out great pizzas from the middle of the jungle in Costa Rica!!! Our kids had a great time writing on his walls... Had a little difficulty finding this place, but was glad that we did. John, the owner is quite a character - very jovial and engaging. Made us feel at home. The restaurant is unusual in that it is open and strewn with graffiti from restaurant guests. Very hippy and trendy! A basic pizza menu but very good pizzas and great... More

We were honeymooning in Costa Rica when we met 'Tiny' at a gas station. Tiny told us to go to Pizza John's if we were near Arenal. It wasn't what we expected, and that ended up being a pleasant suprise. Pizza John and his wife made us two delicious pizzas served with cold Imperials and homemade ice cream for dessert.... More

After reading the reviews we set out to find Pizza John's during our first night in El Castillo. The restaraunt has a real nice vibe to it. Open air dining on the edge of the jungle. The atmosphere is fantastic; relaxed, layed back, pura vida. Make sure you sit upstairs and leave your mark. We met "Tiny" fom Pennsylvania; A... More

We had an opportunity to grab a pizza and some conversation with John last week. The pizza is fresh and delicious and we also enjoyed the homemade ice cream. I particularly liked the Chocolate Ginger, although it sound like he tinkers with the recipes, so this may not be available when you are there. My best advice is order one... More
