Arriving off the ferry near 7pm on a busy Sunday evening, with 2 toddlers in tow and no reservation after spending the day cycling around Inis Mór, we were warmly welcomed and our host found us a table for 4 within minutes. The service was always with a smile, the staff were super helpful with our requests for toddler friendly cups and early delivery of their food, and the atmosphere was fabulous. Our own food was delicious and the menu left me wanting to go back again to try more! Will definitely make a return trip to Donnelly's next time we're in Galway. Highly recommend.

Have dined in Donnellys on quite a few occasions and it has been anything from just ok to good. But last night our experience was excellent. We got one of the nicest tables in the house in one of the snugs. Our waitress, a young lady from Salthill, was really charming and efficient, as were all the staff. Our meals arrived really quickly although we were warned that they might take a long time due to a big group in another room. The food itself was presented beautifully and we were all delighted with it. Pricewise, Donnellys is not overexpensive, compared to many other restaurants. Catch of the Day, hake served on a bed of gorgeous mash with good seasonable vegetables was €22.95....desserts about €6.95. Not so bad. Well done everyone (We've had a lot of bad experiences of late, mostly with bad staff)

It was a brief stop in the beautifully renovated Donnelly’s, but memorable for the creamy Guinness, flavoursome mushrooms & delicious chowder. We visited the day they reopened after COVID-19 & felt safe & comfortable. Good quality, single use menus were provided with the children’s menu overleaf. A one way system is clearly marked throughout the restaurant. The attention to detail such as wall mounted hand sanitizer dispenser immediately outside the restrooms & single use hand wipes made for a reassuring return to dining in. Staff were friendly, service was great. We’re already looking forward to returning.

As we were staying locally, we booked the restaurant for dinner. We arrived and were approached by the Manager but we were really surprised that our Covid Certs were not asked for. I asked the Manager if he was going to look for our Certs but he said that he assumed we were vaccinated! We were seated and the wait began! After 15 minutes, we still hadn't been approached by a server. A group of 5 lads arrived in about 10 minutes after us and the service they received was a lot better than our experience. After 20 minutes, we managed to get the waitresses attention and we asked if we could order. She appeared very disinterested. While waiting for our food to arrive, a large group across from us were querying their bill, only to be told by the waitress that as she'd only come on duty, she didn't know what they'd eaten so they'd have to make up the bill themselves! Our food was ok - nothing special but it was the service that was not acceptable. We asked for a bottle of wine with our main course - we never received it. Trying to get the waitresses attention was virtually impossible. I eventually asked to see the Manager, who also seemed to have "given up" and he apologised for our issues and offered us a drink on the house. When the bill arrived, we had been charged for the "free drink" so we'd to wait again for the correct bill to be issued. What was really annoying was that it was so difficult to get a servers attention for the duration of our visit, yet when using the toilet, my husband had to ask 3 servers if they could move as they were leaning on the bar with their legs splayed out behind them and it wasn't possible to step over them. He had to do the same when returning to the table. Our experience of this restaurant was beyond disappointing and it is not somewhere that we would ever recommend. I am fully aware of the hardships that Covid has caused but not requesting a Covid Cert, when it is part of the requirements is disappointing and unacceptable.

Family of visited Donnellys for dinner. The food was good, but the service was not. The first thing I noticed was a massive TV above the table where we were to be seated. Tye TV flashing images are a distraction and tbh it’s a mystery to me why you feel the need to have a massive TV flashing images above the heads of your customers ! It certainly does nothing to improve the dining experience. I’m guessing such TVs are fantastic for big match games but please … do not subject your customers to distracting imagery during dinner. There is no point. The fact the TV images include adverts for your restaurant, for paying customers who have already decided to spend the evening at your restaurant is bordering on being offensive. Way too commercial. Our drinks took forever to arrive, and side orders of food and a jug of water did not arrive at all. There should be no need for customers to order water, it should be replaced without the customer having to ask. I eventually had to stand up and walk to the counter to ask for service. That was out of frustration as dinner was supposed to be a treat for my family and all I wanted was for them to have a positive dining experience. Used dishes etc were allowed to accumulate on our table, and were only removed after I asked one of your employees to take them away after she satisfied herself that the table next to ours was free of soiled ware (btw that table was empty, with no customers). It didn’t occur to her to even look in our direction. I’m taking the time to write this feedback to help you improve. Donnelly’s was a very special place for both me and my family. I had lots of positive experiences there. I am confident fixing these table service issues is well within your capabilities. Thank You. Johnny, Limerick

First time in my life I had hard prawns! Sent them back and they back out again! Fish of the day was lovely. My lasagne was thin and over baked. Dish was too shallow for lasagne! The same for the apple crumble dish was too shallow. Hard to taste any apple and the topping was a spongy topping which I hate. Gave feedback to manager and was promptly overcharged by €15. They need to up their game. This used to be great spot!

On Thursday last 17th Sept myself and two friends had dinner at your restaurant, dining outside. It was a total disappointment. My choice was the Vegetarian Linguini with pesto. It was awful, not a trace of pesto, instead the linguini was doused in what tasted like a creamy soup. The vegetables were very scarce, bits of peppers and mushrooms. If you plan to serve Italian dishes, more attention needs to be paid as to how it is done. The other meals were mediocre, fish (hake) and chips, poor presentation and steak and chips. The service was very poor, we were just served the food and that was it. Later, another waiter came by to clear the plates, I mentioned my meal but there was no comment. We won’t be returning and would not recommend you restaurant

I personally called in to Donnelly's on June 30th to book a table for the 7pm sitting on July 2nd. I was told that this was their first night open, after a few practice days. When we arrived, the manager told us we weren't on the list. No apology was offered. It was raining & we were shown to a table & advised that when one under shelter was free, we would be moved. This didn't happen & I had to ask, only to be moved to a table where two people in our party were still sitting in the rain, as the umbrella was shared with another table. It took a second time of asking for us to finally get a table out of the rain. This turned out to be the least of the issues that we had. While we got a menu & some water when we arrived, I had to ask the manager to send someone to take our order, as we were waiting for 30 minutes at that stage. There wasn't a printed children's menu available, so we asked what the meals were. One waiter advised fish & chips were available, but when eventually our order was taken, we were told it wasn't on the children's menu. It took a further 45 minutes for two out of four meals to be served & we still hadn't been served any drinks. At that stage we had enough, expressed our frustration & asked for the bill. The manager then appeared to offer us a complimentary voucher. It was too little, too late & even if we had been staying longer in the area, would not have returned. The service was shambolic & the portions of food tiny, meaning that the two people in our party who did get to eat left hungry. We did observe that people from the 5.00 pm sitting were still there when we left at 8.30 pm & that there was no problem for them being served alcohol extremely efficiently.

Didn't feel like cooking yesterday evening so decided to get take away dinner from here. We ordered 2 chowders, 1 goats cheese salad, 1 fish and chips and 1 pasta dish all of which came to €75. It was expensive but I thought its good quality food and it will be a proper dinner so the price didn't bother me too much until we got home and saw the size of the portions - they were tiny. The chowders at €10 each were like child's portions in the smallest take away bowls I've ever seen. The salad for €10.50 isn't worth talking about it was so miserable as were the other 2 dishes we ordered. I tried calling the restaurant but of course there was no answer. I understand the price of produce has increased but €75 is no joke for what we actually received. Galway was already an expensive place to eat out in but what we got yesterday was the definition of Rip Off Republic. Also, on a general note - take out prices should not be the same as dine in prices. Part of the cost you pay is for a restaurant experience which you don't get if you're ordering food to take away. Anyway, won't be going back and won't be recommending.

Our server was very friendly but overworked. Management were extremely poor here, I understand that they are not opened long but the management of staff was extremely poor. Manay tables around us were left unhappy and waiting very long for food and drinks. We saw management multiple times only paying attention to 2 table's with only 2 people on each while tables of 6 were left with nothing on the table and no orders taken. One barman was extremely rude and told us he was working in sections when he was asked to take an order and he had been working there for years. Apparently a section is one table while other staff were run off their feet. The food was decent overall but management should be gotten rid of and get people in who know how to manage staff and be welcoming to guests.

What has happened here. We used eat here regularly before lock down and always had a great meal with.great service..Heard it had been taken over so booked dinner for here this afternoon.Arrived on time ..no question of digital cert ..a first ..shown to our table and given 3 dirty paper menus. Put our drink order in ..my son wanted a pint of milk only for 2 servers to inform us that there was no milk..seriously no milk in a restaurant ..I asked what are they going to use for coffee/tea which one shrugged I don’t know..SuperValu is only 30 yards up the road and Donnellys only open at 1… They then came back with a 3/4 glass ..better than nothing.. Soup snd chowder came ..no spoons with it and had to ask for them..served with a paper think slice of brown bread..that looked very like mccambridges ..one slice each..I asked the girl for more bread and she came back with 2 slices between 3 of us. As we had used the knives for the butter I expected them to be cleared away and replaced ..but they weren’t..had to ask for more napkins when the mains came . Food was good to be fair but the icing on the cake was when we asked for the bill only for it to be thrown on the table like a Lidl receipt ..not even on a plate.. I don’t know what has gone wrong here but we will not be back ..€97 for 3 starters , mains..2 pints of Heineken and 3/4 glass milk is over the top for pub grub.. Never again.

Went there this evening as we booked a table for 7PM. Realised very quickly that the restaurant was overbooked as another 20 people arrived at the same time booked in for 7PM but all tables for outdoor dining were full. We were sent to a standing table to wait and we were told that somebody would take our drink order. 10 minutes went by and nothing happened and more and more people arrived. When we inquired we were told that it will take at least another 30 minutes as the 5PM customers didn't leave yet. The whole experience was extremely disappointing. Number one don't accept that many bookings if you cant handle it. Number 2 if you set a time limit of 2 hours for customers make sure that you serve the customers on time so they leave on time for the next round of customers. Number 3 please at least tell the truth when customers arrive and dont just send them waiting without setting realistic expectations. The current circumstance of outdoor dining is not ideal but this experience was extremely frustrating and we decided to leave. Sadly we wont be coming back here which is a pity as I always enjoyed the atmosphere and food in Donnellys but this service was unacceptable and really let them down as a business.

Staying in the twelve hotel for few days and decided to try this restaurant opposite the hotel. We had no booking and we got last table available at lunchtime. Very friendly and helpful staff. The food was very good. Kids are well catered for. The kids cup of soup was very tasty and both my young kids enjoyed their starter and main course. We had chicken parfait and fish and mussels and all was tasty and enjoyable. Will definitely return if in the area again.

Although I'm not a regular restaurant goer, I'm seriously considering making a visit to Donnellys a weekly event. From the riot of now fading reminder of summer colour surrounding the garden entrance to the contrasting duck egg notes highlighting the gorgeous gable end stonework in the conservatory, the ambience of Donnellys embraces you for a quietly memorable culinary experience. On the menu for us yesterday was a delicious vibrant and silky smooth vegetable soup followed by mussels(for me) born and reared in Killary Harbour. The trinity of garlic, shallots, cream married perfectly with the taste of the sea. I was transported back to the last time I enjoyed that particular taste combination: memories of my father collecting a bucket of them from the shore of Dunbulcan Bay and bringing them home to Gran to work her culinary magic. My mother chose the catch of the day: succulent oven baked sea trout with truffle mash, tenderstem broccoli (al dente), roasted cherry tomatoes, a cleverly deconstructed tartar salad of gherkins and capers and a balsamic reduction. It was such a pleasure listening to her intense enjoyment and fondly recollection of another recent Donnelly firm favourite: baked cod on a smoked cod risotto with samphire. So pretty and such care and attention to detail; flavours so subtle. Both fish cooked to absolute perfection- not a second over or under. Each flavour inviting curiosity and pleasure filled analysis. Now those cynics amongst you may think I'm prone to exaggerating; and I'll freely admit that after the long covid lockdowns I have approached and appreciated this renewed dining experience rather like those cold beers in that iconic last scene in the film 'Ice cold in Alex'. However, in my view, the chef's genius lies in his careful choice of excellent quality ingredients and allowing them to speak for themselves. Finally, I couldn't end this review without a big shout out to the staff who without exception are personable, helpful, knowledgeable. They are efficient, attentive and discrete- how many times have you been in a restaurant where it feels as though you are being watched? Noticeably hovering staff is one of my bugbears and thankfully, you won't find it at Donnellys. The message is clear from their warm welcome : it is a genuine pleasure to see you, and how can we make your culinary experience the best it can be?
