Family of visited Donnellys for dinner. The food was good, but the service was not. The first thing I noticed was a massive TV above the table where we were to be seated. Tye TV flashing images are a distraction and tbh it’s a mystery...to me why you feel the need to have a massive TV flashing images above the heads of your customers ! It certainly does nothing to improve the dining experience. I’m guessing such TVs are fantastic for big match games but please … do not subject your customers to distracting imagery during dinner. There is no point. The fact the TV images include adverts for your restaurant, for paying customers who have already decided to spend the evening at your restaurant is bordering on being offensive. Way too commercial. Our drinks took forever to arrive, and side orders of food and a jug of water did not arrive at all. There should be no need for customers to order water, it should be replaced without the customer having to ask. I eventually had to stand up and walk to the counter to ask for service. That was out of frustration as dinner was supposed to be a treat for my family and all I wanted was for them to have a positive dining experience. Used dishes etc were allowed to accumulate on our table, and were only removed after I asked one of your employees to take them away after she satisfied herself that the table next to ours was free of soiled ware (btw that table was empty, with no customers). It didn’t occur to her to even look in our direction. I’m taking the time to write this feedback to help you improve. Donnelly’s was a very special place for both me and my family. I had lots of positive experiences there. I am confident fixing these table service issues is well within your capabilities. Thank You. Johnny, LimerickMore

3 of us went for lunch yesterday. Service was good; prompt and friendly. The food was only passable and very overpriced for what we got. Plate of the day consisted of a small piece to pan fried trout, unremarkable mashed potatoes and a small portion...of roast veg. 22.50euro. We were disappointed and won't be rushing backMore

As we were staying locally, we booked the restaurant for dinner. We arrived and were approached by the Manager but we were really surprised that our Covid Certs were not asked for. I asked the Manager if he was going to look for our Certs...but he said that he assumed we were vaccinated! We were seated and the wait began! After 15 minutes, we still hadn't been approached by a server. A group of 5 lads arrived in about 10 minutes after us and the service they received was a lot better than our experience. After 20 minutes, we managed to get the waitresses attention and we asked if we could order. She appeared very disinterested. While waiting for our food to arrive, a large group across from us were querying their bill, only to be told by the waitress that as she'd only come on duty, she didn't know what they'd eaten so they'd have to make up the bill themselves! Our food was ok - nothing special but it was the service that was not acceptable. We asked for a bottle of wine with our main course - we never received it. Trying to get the waitresses attention was virtually impossible. I eventually asked to see the Manager, who also seemed to have "given up" and he apologised for our issues and offered us a drink on the house. When the bill arrived, we had been charged for the "free drink" so we'd to wait again for the correct bill to be issued. What was really annoying was that it was so difficult to get a servers attention for the duration of our visit, yet when using the toilet, my husband had to ask 3 servers if they could move as they were leaning on the bar with their legs splayed out behind them and it wasn't possible to step over them. He had to do the same when returning to the table. Our experience of this restaurant was beyond disappointing and it is not somewhere that we would ever recommend. I am fully aware of the hardships that Covid has caused but not requesting a Covid Cert, when it is part of the requirements is disappointing and unacceptable.More

What has happened here. We used eat here regularly before lock down and always had a great meal with.great service..Heard it had been taken over so booked dinner for here this afternoon.Arrived on time ..no question of digital cert ..a first ..shown to our table...and given 3 dirty paper menus. Put our drink order in ..my son wanted a pint of milk only for 2 servers to inform us that there was no milk..seriously no milk in a restaurant ..I asked what are they going to use for coffee/tea which one shrugged I don’t know..SuperValu is only 30 yards up the road and Donnellys only open at 1… They then came back with a 3/4 glass ..better than nothing.. Soup snd chowder came ..no spoons with it and had to ask for them..served with a paper think slice of brown bread..that looked very like mccambridges ..one slice each..I asked the girl for more bread and she came back with 2 slices between 3 of us. As we had used the knives for the butter I expected them to be cleared away and replaced ..but they weren’t..had to ask for more napkins when the mains came . Food was good to be fair but the icing on the cake was when we asked for the bill only for it to be thrown on the table like a Lidl receipt ..not even on a plate.. I don’t know what has gone wrong here but we will not be back ..€97 for 3 starters , mains..2 pints of Heineken and 3/4 glass milk is over the top for pub grub.. Never again.More

Although I'm not a regular restaurant goer, I'm seriously considering making a visit to Donnellys a weekly event. From the riot of now fading reminder of summer colour surrounding the garden entrance to the contrasting duck egg notes highlighting the gorgeous gable end stonework in...the conservatory, the ambience of Donnellys embraces you for a quietly memorable culinary experience. On the menu for us yesterday was a delicious vibrant and silky smooth vegetable soup followed by mussels(for me) born and reared in Killary Harbour. The trinity of garlic, shallots, cream married perfectly with the taste of the sea. I was transported back to the last time I enjoyed that particular taste combination: memories of my father collecting a bucket of them from the shore of Dunbulcan Bay and bringing them home to Gran to work her culinary magic. My mother chose the catch of the day: succulent oven baked sea trout with truffle mash, tenderstem broccoli (al dente), roasted cherry tomatoes, a cleverly deconstructed tartar salad of gherkins and capers and a balsamic reduction. It was such a pleasure listening to her intense enjoyment and fondly recollection of another recent Donnelly firm favourite: baked cod on a smoked cod risotto with samphire. So pretty and such care and attention to detail; flavours so subtle. Both fish cooked to absolute perfection- not a second over or under. Each flavour inviting curiosity and pleasure filled analysis. Now those cynics amongst you may think I'm prone to exaggerating; and I'll freely admit that after the long covid lockdowns I have approached and appreciated this renewed dining experience rather like those cold beers in that iconic last scene in the film 'Ice cold in Alex'. However, in my view, the chef's genius lies in his careful choice of excellent quality ingredients and allowing them to speak for themselves. Finally, I couldn't end this review without a big shout out to the staff who without exception are personable, helpful, knowledgeable. They are efficient, attentive and discrete- how many times have you been in a restaurant where it feels as though you are being watched? Noticeably hovering staff is one of my bugbears and thankfully, you won't find it at Donnellys. The message is clear from their warm welcome : it is a genuine pleasure to see you, and how can we make your culinary experience the best it can be?More

After spending some time down at the beach we had some mouths to feed. After a quick phone call to see if they could accommodate 6 of us (after all it was all Ireland day) we headed to Donnelly. And glad that we did. Professional...friendly staff, lively atmosphere and fantastic food. A slight system hiccup was quickly remedied. If you are in barna this place is well worth a visit.More
