I have not seen Dojou (Loach) restaurants in foreign countries. As Dojou are in river, I thought it should have smells like the ones we experiences for the fishes in Bangkok. Dojou, however, is not like that when properly cooked by good chefs like Iida-ya's. Iida-ya looks like a traditional Japanese restaurant, and attracts many Japanese and foreign visitors alike.... My partner and I visited Dozeu Iidaya on a rainy night in July. We were drawn in by the smell on the street, and poked our heads in to see what they served. The dishes were limited to a river fish served several ways; in a hot pot, with egg, etc. The tables were exclusively on the floor, though some... More

This restaurant was not far from the Akusasa View hotel where we were staying. Fortunately, one of the young staff spoke some English and was very helpful, as were others who did not speak English but were very kind and welcoming. Dinner was cooked in a pan on top of the table--small strips of loach filets (you can also get... More

1 of 5 remaining restaurants of this type left in Tokio. No tourists only local people eating in this place. Reduced menu only in Japanese, difficult to chose what you eat so can be quit a surprise :-) suggestion is the to go for the restaurant special which is kind of sardine like small fish cooked at the table with... Totally off the radar and a hidden gem. The traditional foods that are served are unique to Tokyo and date back to pre-Edo times. Very kind staff but you should go with someone who can speak Japanese.

Was staying near by and checked this place out for lunch. It was fantastic, such a great atmosphere. The people were very friendly and so helpful. We had the unagi with spring onions, as well as some great side dishes. It was delicious and affordable. Definitely check it out if your in the area.

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
