Inshotei is a long-established restaurant since 1875 and its old Japanese house is very quaint. Dishes were sophisticated and delicious. Presentation was beautiful and service was good.

Inshotei at lunch is a total bargain. The 2000-2600 yen bento includes a variety of amazingly well prepared dishes showcasing Japanese cuisine. These guys know how to use daishi really well. I found many of the items to truly amazing, on par with some Kaiseki, though a few were just average. The private rooms are the way to go. Traditional... More

There were three of us so we were given one of their mat rooms with a sliding door. There is even space for your legs under the table. There are also benches looking out to the greenery if you prefer. Staff could not be nicer and while they are not catering for foreigners they do have a simple menu in... More

As stated by other reviewers, they only served a set course menu. I had the one with chicken. A wonderful combination of soups, sashimi, tofu, chicken and rice dishes were served and some of them cooked at your table. Although the staff don't all speak English they went out of there way to make it clear, if I asked what... More

Not only typical traditional Japanese dish but also you can enjoy Japanese style building when you visit Inshotei. The location is fine! It's on top of the Ueno hill, 7minutes walk from Ueno station and next to Ueno zoo.In spring, this whole area will be covered with cherry blossoms.

Following the recommendation of one of our guides, as we were staying in the area for our last night in Japan, we found our way to this restaurant with some help from a local resident. In the dark - it was very difficult to see anything! Having been told at the entrance - it was cash only - we were... More

We went here after beeing at the national museum. Remember to bring cash! We didn't, and had to walk quite far to an ATM that accepted foreign cards. The waitress felt so sorry for us and "removed" one beer from the bill as a compensation. Food was very nice served! Tasted really good, but as we are a little unused... More

Visited this restaurant when the cherries were blossoming. The area was very beautiful, the view spectacular, and the place very full. Had a table after 20 minutes wait. Service was very efficient and friendly. Food was excellent, we had a "fixed menu", I think the Ala Carte list was not available as this was absolute high season for the restaurant.... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
