You start by taking off your shoes and being seated at a hot plate-table. if you are a foreigner, they will gladly help you throughout the whole cooking process. The food was good and staff were very friendly.

Tokyo isn't rich with Okonomiyaki restaurants as the origin of this dish is from Osaka.Nevertheless i was told that this is the place to try some. i came by one late afternoon, waited in line for about 25 min and was asked inside. like stated here before you have to take off your shoes, but another thing you should pay... We had read rave reviews about this place. And it was definitely an interesting Japanese experience- take your shoes off, sit on the floor, cook yourself on the grill etc. But the okonomiyaki was just about average. We didn't catch any queues here but normally there's a long Waiting. Go here for a different experience, when in Asakusa/ sensoji.

We enjoyed our visit to Sometaro which our hotel, Wired booked for us. The setting is traditional tatami seating around hot plates which you use to cook the okonomayaki. We tried two types, one with prawn and bonito flakes and one with beef. We took up one of the chefs offers to cook one of them and it was so... More

It’s close to the Tamarawachi stop on the Ginza Metro line, but is a little hard to find because it’s off the main street. It’s small and unassuming on the outside with poor english signage. On the inside there are some teppanyaki grills set up with Japanese style seating on the floor. There are different things to order like soba... More

Really great teppanyaki (Japanese hot plate) in Tokio. Restaurant with authentic atmosphere. Great food and unforgettable impressions. As a bonus you will receive a cooking course on the hot plate. Prices very reasonable, I would say even low.

The guys at Sometaro were extremely nice and helpful. The food was well-tasting, and it was very appetizing to watch it all getting made right in front of you. Would warmly recommend to anyone!

Not the best okonomiyaki I've had in Japan so far, but it's also not bad. It was hard to find, the menu is entirely in Japanese so if you don't speak/read it...well you're in trouble. Cooking it myself was very cool though!

I walked in solo and ended up meeting a new friend to sit with at lunch. This was my first time to try okonomiyaki and I loved it. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The guy I sat with was visiting for a second time because he enjoyed it so much. You sit at a table on the ground... More

This place makes you think you are 100 years back in time. It's very charming and quirky. The staff is friendly and all three dishes I tried were delicious. One thing to consider: no AC. If it is in the middle of the Summer heat this might not be the best place. Even in the Spring the place was uncomfortably... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
