It was so surprising that no more eel when I arrived there just 30mins prior to the door open on Sunday. It means food was avail only for people booked in advance! So I booked for next day & came back as I really wanted to try this! Booking in advance is mandatory! However, food was of course fantastic, even... More

Amazingly delicious, finger-licking good great gem found through personal connection. We reserved eels for six of us but the restaurant booking is not possible, so we had to wait for 20 minutes before we managed to get a perfect setting.

As a lover of unagi I felt I couldn't miss Tomoei and although I had not booked I waited only 20 minutes or so. And the unagi was As I had hoped: superb. Totemo oishikatta desu. However, one advice: bring cash! They don't accept credit cards as some traditional Japanese restaurants don't, but I forgot to check this. The ATMs... More

If you ever go to Hakone you must stop by Odawara for a meal at Tomoei. It's a stand alone building with its own car park and not far from the Odawara station. Its unagi is truly amazing. Excellently done the unagi is creamy fat and tasty. Not too sweet. In my opinion it's even better than Taipei's 肥前屋 and... More

We came for a holiday in hakone and stayed in hakone yumato. It was a pleasant surprise to find that a famous unagi restaurant was so close. We took a bus from town and the driver was kind enough to point out the unprepossessing building housing tomoei. We were fortunate to come early and have a really lovely lady take... More

I arrived just before 5pm on Monday and the restaurant was near empty with only two tables of people. They also asked me if I had bookings but they still let me in though I didn't book. The eel was really soft and the sauce, unlike the other eels I had, was not stronger than the eel. It's absolutely the... More

Went here for an early dinner. Had to wait 15min for a table. But glad I did. I'm a huge eel fan, and this place is far and away the best i've ever eaten. The eel is succulent and just melts and the rice is soft and delicious! Worth a visit if your in the area!

I went there around 10:40 on one Saturday morning in March, however all were already sold out before opening restaurant. @ casher, so many people were waiting to speak to staff, but every staff was so busy. So popular, it's a sign of good food though, I guess they should control crowds somehow. I booked for tomorrow & came back... More

Before you head here just ensure that you get someone (who speaks Japanese) to book for you. Restaurant serves several courses in Kaseki style. Food was delicious and its popularity with the locals is testament to that. Course was fixed and cost us about 8,500 yen per person. Only a short drive from Odawara/Hakone so definitely worth the trip. Staff... More
